ALL SOULS WEEKLY VOLUME 6, NUMBER 31, JUNE 30, 2013

IT’S ALMOST HERE: THE FESTIVAL OF SACRED MUSIC

While many churches slow down for summer and give their a vacation, we’re going the opposite direction in July. Every Sunday next month will feature special music at the High , with a musical prelude beginning each week at 10:50 a.m. The music will be offered in the context of the High Mass, so each Sunday will flow with the normal liturgy, except that the will sing the “Mass ,” those sections we know as the Gloria, , Benedictus, and . Each Sunday’s music will have a particular theme:

Sunday, July 7: “Red, White & Blue: Celebrating American Music” We will feature choral and instrumental music by the American composer Daniel Gawthrop, including his “Durham Mass,” the well-loved anthem “Sing Me to Heaven,” and, recently commissioned for All Souls, “God is Our Refuge.”

Sunday, July 14: “Sacred Spice: Notes from the Big Easy and Elsewhere” This Sunday will bring a little taste of New Orleans to Woodley Park. The setting of the Mass ordinary will be Bob Chilcott’s “A Little Jazz Mass.” A rousing setting of “When the Saints Go Marching In,” complete with clarinet, string bass, piano, and congregational singing in the final chorus, will serve as the anthem.

Saturday, July 20, 7:30 p.m.: Christ’s College (Cambridge, England) Choral concert hosted by All Souls as a part of the Choir’s tour of the United States.

Sunday, July 21: “Jewels of the Crown: A Nod to the English Tradition” July 21 will return to more of the “normal” for us at All Souls. Musical gems of the English choral tradition will be featured throughout our 11 a.m. Mass. The Mass ordinary will be Harold Darke’s Service in E. Other anthems will include Hubert Parry’s “I Was Glad” and William Mathias’ “Let the People Praise Thee.”

Sunday, July 28: “Mozart and More” We will complete our festival with a festival choral accompanied by chamber orchestra. The music of the day includes two of Mozart’s church sonatas (for organ and orchestra), his “Coronation” Mass, and Haydn’s second setting of the “Te Deum.”

Please see Tony Domenico if you have any questions.
