The Sunflower nine opened in 1978 and in 1982, the Hidden Valley and Sunflower nines became Alvamar Country Club. Alvamar was named by developer Bob Billings from the contraction of the names of his parents, Alva and Margaretta Billings of Russell, Kan. In all, Alvamar Golf Club and Country Club encompasses more than 3,000 acres of west Lawrence. The 36 holes at Alvamar were designed by Mel Anderson and Bob Dunning and include a public and private clubhouse, driving range and three practice greens. The two courses at Alvamar were the first in the United States to utilize zoysia grass for its fairways and tees. The course currently uses cohansey bent green on both surfaces. In 1991, Alvamar Country Club hosted the Kansas Amateur. Alvamar Golf Club annually hosts the Kansas Open and has been the site of the United States Golf Associations Women’s Public Links tournament. It was the site of the Big Eight Conference Men’s Championship for eight consecutive years, and in 1990, the Big Eight Conference 4 2011-12 Men’s Golf Guide Alvamar Golf Club Women’s Championship was held at Alvamar and won by the Jayhawks. Alvamar Golf Club hosted the inaugural Big 12 Women’s Championship in 1997 and has been the site of the KU men’s Kansas Invitational and women’s Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational. Having been honored as one of the “best maintained golf courses in the United States” by Grounds Maintenance Magazine, Alvamar continues to improve its attractive golf venue. At Alvamar Golf Club, the Director of Golf is Dave Dunn, while Dick Stuntz serves as head professional at Alvamar Country Club. Alvamar Country Club is considered one of the finest golf courses in the state. Alvamar’s reputation is one of the reasons KU attracts some of the top golfers in the country. 2011-12 Men’s Golf Guide 5 Knapheide Family Practice Facility The Kansas men’s golf program added a new member to the Jayhawk family in 2008: the state-of-the-art Knapheide Family Practice Facility. The new practice facility comes fitted with four heated hitting bays to go along with cutting-edge swing technology. The bays are part of a climate- controlled facility that allows the Kansas golfers to hit balls out into the driving range at Alvamar Golf Club. “This will give

  • Executive Summary
SELF-STUDY Submitted to the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools December 2014 Executive Summary KU is an EO/AA institution. Produced by the Office of the Chancellor. Office of the Chancellor Transformation is a word higher education institutions tend to exploit, regardless of the size or scope of change occurring. As you’ll discover in this 2015 Self-Study, at the University of Kansas it is a phrase that, perhaps, comes up short in describing our activity during the past decade. We are in the midst of implementing a trio of initiatives most institutions would consider transformative if accomplished individually: Bold Aspirations, a five-year strategic plan for the Lawrence and Edwards campus, and the corresponding strategic plan at the Medical Center; Changing for Excellence, a comprehensive overhaul of administrative functions; and Far Above, a comprehensive fundraising campaign for the KU Endowment Association, the nation’s oldest public university endowment. The self-study confirms what we have heard from our stakeholders, from our alumni and supporters, and from the Board of Regents. We are on the right track, and are poised for even greater progress. Our accomplishments are the result of the hard work and willingness of our dedicated and talented faculty and staff to drive needed changes, even when some transitions have been rocky at times. Because of their work, we are seeing results in the successes of our students, in communities that are made healthier and more vibrant, and in the discoveries that will change the world. And our study confirms the tasks that still lay ahead.

WEB.COM TOUR STORYLINES – Week of August 13th MIDWEST CLASSIC presented by Cadillac August 16-19 Nicklaus Golf Club at LionsGate, Overland Park, Kan. (Kansas City) Purse: $550,000 First Prize: $99,000 2011 Champion: James Nitties 156 players 18 th of 27 events GETTING TO KNOW CHRIS WILSON – With 11 missed cuts in his previous 13 starts of 2012, Chris Wilson had not made a big impact on the Web.com Tour. That all changed on Sunday when he defeated fellow Northwestern University alum and Monday qualifier Scott Harrington in a playoff at the Price Cutter Charity Championship presented by Dr Pepper. The winner’s check for $112,500 leaped him from 165 th on the money list to No. 23. Wilson, 27, was born in Columbus, Ohio and resides in nearby Dublin. He gave credit to sports psychologist Bob Rotella for simplifying his approach to putting. Wilson was 132 out of 136 in putting stats entering last week but was T8 for the tournament. Wilson played on the PGA TOUR in 2010 after earning his card via Q-School (T12), making seven cuts in 26 starts. At Northwestern, he won the Big 10 Conference Championship in 2006. His dream foursome includes David Feherty, Carl Spackler (“Caddyshack”) and his dad. ALL GOOD THINGS MUST END – Ben Kohles’ undefeated streak came to an end last week in Springfield, Mo. The 22-year-old made four birdies on the back nine on Friday afternoon to make the Price Cutter Charity Championship 36-hole cut on the number. Rounds of 73-68 on the weekend led to a 60 th - place finish.

  • Clutch Strokes: Performance Under Pressure in Golf
COLLEGE OF THE HOLY CROSS Clutch Strokes: Performance Under Pressure in Golf Jeffrey Paadre This paper examines 10 years worth of PGA Tour Tournament data in order to examine whether or not clutch performance exists during the final round of a tournament. After controlling scores for differences in course difficulty, the paper finds no evidence of tangible clutch performance. The authors find that the perception of clutch performance is more likely attributable to talent differential between golfers. Assuming a normal distribution of golfer talent, it is possible that Tiger Woods can outshoot his opponents on the final day of a tournament as well as lose his lead to his competitors. Motivation and Literature In professional sports, heroes can be created through the concept of clutch performance. The perception of clutch performance occurs when an athlete raises his or her performance to an extraordinary level during the most important moments of a sporting event. Athletes such as David Ortiz and Adam Vinatieri have been immortalized as legends due to their consistent ability to help their teams win baseball and football games during important games where the outcome was hanging in the balance. Conversely Bill Buckner and Scott Norwood are amongst the unfortunate athletes burdened with reputations as choke artists based on their inability to perform well when their teams needed a high performance the most. One of the challenges that accompanies examining performance under pressure lies within trying to define which performances constitute clutch performance. For example, in 2005 John Henry, the owner of the Boston Red Sox, presented David Ortiz with a plaque inscribed “David Ortiz: The Greatest Clutch Hitter in the History of the Boston Red Sox”.
