Two New Species of Eimeria and Three New Species of Isospora (Apicomplexa, Eimeriidae) from Brazilian Mammals and Birds

Two new species of Eimeria and three new species of Isospora (Apicomplexa, Eimeriidae) from Brazilian mammals and birds by R. LAINSON and J. J. SHAW Abstract. — Thirteen " four-eyed opossums ", Philander o. opossum, from Para State, north Brazil, were examined for coccidial oocysts in faecal samples. Five were infected with an eimerian, considered a new species, 2 with an isosporan which is possibly /. boughtoni Volk, and 2 with both thèse parasites. Oocysts of Eimeria philanderi n. sp., are spherical to subspherical and average 23.50 x 22.38 (21.25- 27.50 x 18.75-25.00) (xm : single polar body : no oocyst residuum. Oocyst wall 1.88 [ira, with mamillated surface and composed of two striated layers, the inner brown-yellow and the outer colourless : no micropyle. Sporocysts average 11.35 x 8.13 (10.00-12.00 x 7.50-8.75) (xm, oval to ellipsoidal, with prominent nipple-like Stieda body : residuum bulky, compact or scattered between two recurved sporozoites. Oocysts of the Isospora sp., close to /. boughtoni initially sub-spherical, 17.92 x 16.53 (16.25- 20.00 x 13.75-18.75) (xm : latterly deformed by collapse of the délicate, colourless wall : no micropyle, oocyst residuum or polar body. Sporocysts 13.35 x 9.88 (12.50-13.75 x 8.75-11.25) (xm, ellipsoidal, with no Stieda body. Two of 5 " woolly opossums ", Caluromys p. philander, were infected with an eimerian considered as a new species, Eimeria caluromydis n. -

Crocodile Caiman Crocodilia Alligator Gharial (Gavial) Crocodiles The name crocodile comes from the Ancient Greek word ‘crocodilos’ meaning ‘lizard’. There are 14 dierent species of crocodile in the world today. They inhabit warm, tropical environments and can be found throughout Asia, Africa and Central America. The largest species of crocodile is the esturine crocodile. These crocodiles inhabit South East Asia and Australia. An adult male can grow to an average size of 5 metres (17ft). Some have been known to reach 6-7 Esturine (salt water) crocodile metres (20-23 ft). These are the most aggressive species of crocodile. The Nile crocodile is the second largest species of crocodile. It generally does not inhabit salt water environments and can be found in lakes, rivers and marshlands of the central and eastern parts of the African continent. The smallest crocodile species is the dwarf crocodile, which grows to an average length of around 1.5 metres (4.9 ft). This species is found in the subtropical regions of western and central Africa. Dwarf Crocodile Caiman There are 6 species of caiman living in the world today. They can be found in warm climates in parts of Central and South America, including the Amazon rainforest. Caimans get their name from the spanish word for alligator. Caimans and alligators are related. -

This novel coccidian is unusual because it develops extra-intestinally and sporulates endogenously within the prostate gland of its mammalian host. Histological examination of prostatic tissue revealed dense aggregations of spherical and thin-walled tetrasporocystic, dizoic sporulated coccidian oocysts within tubular lumina, with unsporulated oocysts and gamogonic stages within the cytoplasm of glandular epithelial cells. This coccidian was observed occurring concurrently with dasyurid herpesvirus 1 infection of the antechinus' prostate. Eimeria- specific 18S small subunit ribosomal DNA PCR amplification was used to obtain a partial 18S rDNA nucleotide sequence from the antechinus coccidian. -

Oocyst wall is bilayerd, ~ 1.5 µm thick, smooth and colourless. Micropyle and oocyst residuum are absent. The sporocysts are ovoid, 13.2 × 10.9 (15-17 × 10-13) µm, SI = 1.56 (1.42-1.71), with a small Stieda body and residuum composed of numerous granules scattered among the sporozoites. Sporozoites are elongated and posses a smooth surface and two distinct refractile bodies. Oocysts of Isospora braziliensis n. sp. are spherical to subspherical, 17.8 × 16.9 (16-19 × 16-18) µm, with a shape-index of 1.06 (1.00-1.12) and a smooth, single-layered wall ~ 1 µm thick. A micropyle, oocyst residuum and polar granules are absent. Sporocysts are ellipsoid and slightly asymmetric, 13.2 × 10.8 (12-14 × 9-12) µm, SI = 1.48 (1.34-1.61). -

Resumen Entre 1992 y 1994 se capturaron 88 individuos del lagarto negro en la laguna de Cocha Cashu en el Parque Nacional del Manú, localizado en la Amazonia peruana. De los individuos capturados, se colectaron muestras de contenido estomacal y se tomaron diferentes medidas de tama o. Dentro de las muestras colectadas, se contarón cerca de 15 categorías de alimento, incluyendo vertebrados e invertebrados. Caracoles del género Pomatia spp y peces fueron las categorias más importantes encontradas. La presencia de caracoles fué más abundante en los estómagos de animales jovenes, mientras que los peces fueron más abundantes en los estomagos de animales adultos. Vertebrados, tales como batracios, peque as aves, y mamíferos, también se encontrarón en forma esporádica. Los resultados del análisis estadístico y descriptivo indican que existe un efecto ontogénico significativo en la composicion de la dieta. También se encontarón, diferencias estacionales significativas en la composición de la dieta, lo cual indicaría que el lagarto negro modifica su comportamiento alimenticio de acuerdo a la disponibilidad de alimento. El estudio de distribución de hábitat en el área del Parque Nacional del Manú permitió determinar areas naturales como lagunas y áreas ribere as que presentan una alta diversidad de organismos de varios niveles tróficos y son alimento para el lagarto negro. -

Proposal Transfer of the population of black caiman Melanosuchus niger of Brazil from Appendix I to Appendix II of CITES, in accordance with Article II, paragraph 2. a), of the Convention and with Resolution Conf. 9.24 (Rev. CoP13) Annex 4, paragraph A. 2. b). B. Proponent Brazil C. Supporting statement Transferring the black caiman from CITES Appendix I to Appendix II will not harm or result in risk to wild populations because: a) the black caiman is abundant and widely distributed within its range in Brazil; b) regarding international trade, the Brazilian CITES Management Authority has effective mechanisms to control all segments of the production chain and, under the controlling measures, it will be advantageous to act legally rather than illegally; c) harvest will occur only in Sustainable Use Conservation Units, which will have their specific management plans that may range from no harvest to a maximum of 10 % of the estimated population size; and d) there is an efficient system to monitor the natural populations and their habitats and to ensure that conservation goals through sustainable use can be achieved. More broadly, in accordance with Resolution Conf. 13.2, each of the 14 Addis Ababa Principles and Guidelines for the Sustainable Use of Biodiversity (see CBD website), will be closely observed. 1. Since the morphological descriptions of parasites are often brief and incomplete and the degree of host specificity may be influenced by numerous factors, such analyses are methodologically difficult and require modern molecular methods. The presented study addresses several questions related to evolutionary relationships within a large and important group of apicomplexan parasites, coccidia, particularly Eimeria and Isospora species from various groups of small mammal hosts. At a population level, the pattern of intraspecific structure, genetic variability and genealogy in the populations of Eimeria spp. infecting field mice of the genus Apodemus is investigated with respect to host specificity and geographic distribution.
