The Military Orders in Wales and the Welsh March in the Middle Ages In the later medieval centuries the Hospitallers’ estates in Wales were among the most extensive of any religious corporation there. In 1535, just before the dissolution of the monasteries, the commandery at Slebech was the third richest monastic house in Wales, after the Cistercian abbeys at Tintern and Valle Crucis. List of Parliamentary Families 527 WAKE Origins: The Wakes were a Norman family that held land in Guernsey c. 1100 and in Lincolnshire by the 12th c. Acquired estates in Northamptonshire by marriage 1138. Summoned to Parliament as a baron by writ (Lord Wake) 1295-99. The second Lord Wake summoned as a baron 1317-48. First MP 1300 for Northamptonshire. Four further MPs 1407-1624, three kts of the shire. 1. Sir William Wake 8 Bt – Bedford 1774-84 Seats: Courteenhall, Northamptonshire (built later 16th c., remod. 17th c., inher. by mar. to Jones heiress 1672, rebuilt 1791-95, still own); The Abbey House, Waltham, Essex (built c. 1590, acq. by Jones family 1676 and inher. by Wakes from them 1688, main seat until late 18th c., largely abandoned after 1739, ruinous by 1770) Estates: Bateman 3141 (E) 5810. Owned 62,500 acres in Scotland in 1970. The Scottish estate was sold. Still owned 2,000 acres in Northamptonshire in 2001. Title: Baronet 1621- Notes: The 3rd Wake Bt married the Drury heiress and succeeded to estates in Suffolk 1712-44. The Drurys quite probably accompanied the Conqueror to England. On the positive side, we have been able to slow down, enjoy immediate families and get caught up on many of those things that get shelved because of a lack of time. We are learning new technologies and ways of contributing as we work together for the common good. For now, staying connected is more important than ever before. Despite our ‘sheltering in place’, our Commanderies have devised some ingenious ways of remotely holding ‘virtual’ member meetings as well as raising money for those who became, in some instances, in dire need of assistance. We have also had several Commandery and Grand Priory Zoom meetings to ensure that everyone is well and that we are keeping our contacts timely. In November my own San Francisco Commandery held a virtual guided wine tasting Zoom meet- ing with a very knowledgeable vintner, who explained three different bold California wines, which were sent to us before the event. The wine concierge also provided food pairings as we tasted and learned! Once you registered for the event, the wine was shipped to you. This was fun and was a trial run for a much larger event next year. I was privileged to preside over the first virtual two-day Sovereign Council Meeting in September. -

Sovereign Order of St John of Jerusalem, Knights Hospitaller Issue No 6, The Grand Priory of Europe Newsletter December 2010 s my term of office officially ends in January 2011, this will be my last message as Grand Prior of AEurope. It has been an honour and a privilege to serve the members within the various Commanderies in Europe over the last four years and to have played a small part in the recent re-unification. I am pleased to report that H.E. Conventual Bailiff, René Tonna-Barthet GCSJ, CMSJ and Bar, has accepted my invitation to act as Chairman of the Nominations Committee to elect my successor and René will be reporting to the membership when the outcome of the election is known. The last four years have been both challenging and rewarding, watching the membership grow with new and talented individuals joining our ranks who have brought a wealth of skills and experience to our Order enabling us to carry out our mission to help those in our communities in desperate need of our help. The Trustees of the charitable trust have considered and approved donations to many worthy causes, made possible through the tremendous efforts of our members, whose donations and fund raising initiatives have to be greatly admired and praised. During 2009 the re-structuring of the Priories of England and H.E. Bailiff Donald J. Storrie GCSJ, MMSJ Scotland into Commanderies took effect and the Priory of the United Kingdom and Ireland was established in time for the re-unification ceremony in September. It was a great honour Europe to access the membership directory, annual accounts, that my last act as Grand Prior was to invest five Knights and minutes of chapter meetings, notification of events and all one Dame into the Commandery of England and my grateful editions, past and future, of The European.
