In the FIFA World Rankings for the year 2001, the bottom two Countries, in 201st and 202nd places, were Bhutan and Montserrat and two Dutch Ad-Agency Directors came up with the idea that the two sides should meet and, against all the odds, the game took place in Bhutan on the same day as the World Cup Final. The Island of Montserrat had been tragically and badly damaged by a major volcanic eruption in 1996 and the Montserrat authorities agreed to the game on the grounds it would put the Island, albeit briefly, in the limelight and provide a major topic of interest for the local population. The logistics of getting from the Caribbean to Bhutan are beyond contemplation and a look at You Tube Clips of the flight from Kathmandu to Bhutan and the landing at Bhutan Airport would not exactly be encouraging. It appears that the planes pass closely by Mount Everest rather than over it!! A brief outline of the football in the two nations. Bhutan has a Premier League and a Super League, both with eight Clubs, and a three up, three down relegation between the two, plus four regional Leagues. In 2018 the Country entered the qualifying stages of the World Cup and defeated Sri Lanka home and away but conceded six against China, seven against Hong Kong and fifteen against Qatar, They also lost 9-3 to the Maldives in a game in which their Coach was sacked at half time! Again, one wonders at the logistics of the travel. There has been organised football in Montserrat since 1970 and in 2018 there was a Championship involving ten clubs though football takes second place to cricket in terms of popularity on the Island. The National side is taking place in the 2022 World Cup Qualifiers where they have drawn with Antigua & Barbuda and El Salvador and have yet to play the US Virgin Islands, Grenada and Trinidad & Tobago. The vast majority of their current International squad actually play for Clubs in this Country, mainly in the upper levels of the Non- League pyramid. The Island has a population of around 5,000 against Bhutan’s 770,000 – a slight difference. Add to this that Bhutan is 7,400 feet above sea level and Montserrat were somewhat disadvantaged. So to the match itself but little in the way of a match report can be found. It was 1-0 to the hosts at the break and, no doubt affected by the altitude, Montserrat conceded three more goals between the 67th and 76th minutes to give the hosts a resounding victory. At the time this was Bhutan’s first ever win and the first time they had kept a clean sheet. There was an English connection to the day as the referee was Steve Bennett from Kent, at the time a Premiership Referee. Surely one of his strangest appointments. Both Countries have improved their rankings in the 2020 listing with Bhutan at 187 and Montserrat at 180 out of a total of 210 Countries. A most unusual fixture and credit to all that took part and assisted in making it happen. ADVANCE NOTICE OF ROADWORKS - A31 RINGWOOD Those travelling to or from Bournemouth, Christchurch, Hamworthy United, Ringwood Town and Verwood Town could face a year of traffic chaos as a busy slip road onto the A31 could close for a year. Highways England plans to introduce a third lane and widen the A31 in Ringwood when works start later this year. Whilst it is appreciated that this is a long way ahead, please bookmark this in readiness as it is likely to cause a great deal of congestion locally. The works mean the westbound slip road from the Ringwood Roundabout will close in November, potentially for a whole year. This may mean drivers are forced to travel east and turning at Poulner to head West towards Bournemouth. A contraflow system will also be in place, meaning road users travelling west will move to the eastbound carriageway. The project is planned to commence in November with the reconstruction of the slip road, and then from January 2022, the A31 westbound will be closed to facilitate the reconstruction work, construction of a third lane and demolition work.” Saturday, 01 May 2021 Page 5 of 8 SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2020/21 EDITION NUMBER 44 RESULTS ROUNDUP Tuesday 27 April Hampshire Senior Invitational Cup Group 1 AFC Portchester H-W United Services Portsmouth Hampshire Senior Invitational Cup Group 2 Blackfield & Langley 4-0 Fawley AFC Rudy Plummer Cassius Newton Dom Panesar-Dower [2] Hampshire Senior Invitational Cup Group 3 Ringwood Town 0-2 Bemerton Heath Harlequins Justin Bennett Harvey Clark Hampshire Senior Invitational Cup Group 4 Cove 1-2 Alton Lloyd Snell 70 Matt Graham 31 pen Chris Horton 85 Hartley Wintney H-W Whitchurch United Friendly Tadley Calleva 3-0 Bracknell Town Wednesday 28 April Hampshire Senior Invitational Cup Group 1 Petersfield Town 2-3 Folland Sports Will Essai 25 Clayd Roach Jordan Geddes 85 Ethan Anders Arshia Sheibatzadeh

  • Newsletter 24
THE BHUTAN SOCIETY NEWSLETTER Number 24 President: Lord Wilson of Tillyorn, KT, GCMG September 2002 The 10th Anniversary of the Bhutan Society 1992-2002 Painting to be Auctioned at Annual Dinner here will be an opportunity to bid for a painting by TMichael Blooman A.R.C.A. at the Society's Annual Dinner on 18 October (see page 3). Michael has very kindly donated this watercolour depicting Taktsang Lhakhang prior to the tragic fire. The painting will be on view throughout the evening and the auction will be 'silent' with bids being written and placed in the envelopes provided. All money raised will go to the Bhutan Society Trust Fund. Anyone who would like to place a bid, but who will not be attending the dinner, can do so by contacting Linda Li-Davies on (01730) 893829. Michael Blooman A.R.C.A. Michael Blooman travelled widely in Bhutan on five expeditions between 1991 and 1995 and painted a series of watercolours. This watercolour of Taktsang Lhakhang was painted in 1991 before the fire of 19 April 1998. Taktsang Lhakhang, the ‘Tiger’s Lair’ as it is known, clings to a precipitous cliff some 2,600 feet above the valley and is believed to be where Guru Rinpoche flew on the back of a tigress to bring Buddhism to the Paro valley. Michael Blooman studied painting at the Royal College of Art in the early 1960s. He was a lecturer at Maidstone College of Art and recently retired from teaching Art at Brentwood Taktsang Lhakhang School. He is presently painting a series of watercolours of Watercolour by Michael Blooman A.R.C.A.

  • The Right Result
www.rightresult.net The Right Result website was launched in August 2006 with a view to creating an alternative Premier League table based upon how things would look if the referees got all the key decisions correct. These decisions relate to penalties that aren’t given when they should be, and those that are awarded dubiously, whether a ball did or didn’t cross the line, goals disallowed for questionable offside and so on. Decisions are made virtually every week that not only can affect the scoreline of a game, but actually alter the outcome. Each week the Right Result panel selects the key controversies that have happened during the course of the week’s matches, applies the strict rules of the game to them and passes judgement on whether or not those decisions should stand. If not then the match results are adjusted accordingly (for rules see www.rightresult.net/rulebook). The panel is a neutral and independent body comprised of members from the Association of Football Statisticians (www.11v11.com). Please find for your information this end of season synopsis including the final Right Result League table accompanied by statistical information and analysis as supplied by the Association of Football Statisticians. 91 wrong decisions have affected the scoreline of games this season. In the Right Result league table overall there would be 20 additional home goals scored and 37 extra away goals. Being at home clearly makes a difference to scorelines. This data supports the contention that better refereeing will lead to more goals, especially for away teams.
