Lecture! [n.s., n.d.] Isabella Baumfree (Sojourner Truth) was born in 1797 on the Colonel Johannes Hardenbergh estate in Swartekill, Ulster County, a Dutch settlement in upstate New York. She spoke only Dutch until she was sold from her family around the age of nine. In 1829, Baumfree met Elijah Pierson, an enthusiastic religious reformer who led a small group of followers in his household called the “Kingdom.” She became the housekeeper for this group, and was encouraged to preach among them. Robert Matthias, also known as Matthias the Prophet, eventually took control of the group and instituted unorthodox religious and sexual practices. The “Kingdom” ended in public scandal. On June 1, 1843, Baumfree adopted the sobriquet Sojourner Truth. Unsoured by her experience in the “Kingdom” she joined the Northampton Association of Education and Industry in Massachusetts. This anti-slavery, pro-women’s rights group lived communally and manufactured silk. After the Northampton Association disbanded in 1846 Truth became involved with the Progressive Friends, an offshoot of the Quakers. Truth began her career in public speaking during the 1850s.

  • SERIES BOOKS by James Dawson
GETTING SERIOUS ABOUT SERIES BOOKS by James Dawson Series books have been popular with kids for a hundred years. We have all read or heard of Nancy Drew and the Hardy boys, but those two are just the tip of the book- berg. Series books are as popular with collectors as they have ever been and the interest is still growing. It seems like every kid read, traded and collected these books only to find out, years later, that their mothers had, just as attentively, thrown them out. Many collectors buy these books to attempt to capture a lost part of their youth, or to give them to their kids as wholesome reading. Young readers still love them. I literally just had to stop writing that last sentence to sell a Nancy Drew #10 to a cute little girl who was hooked on them. That is quite an endorsement for a series that first appeared in 1930! Series books first started in the mid 1800s. Starting in 1868, Horatio Alger Jr. wrote an extremely popular run of books all of which had pretty much the same plot. A ragged, penniless boy comes to the big city and 200 pages later is rich. He wrote about a hundred of these by the turn of the century. His books aren t considered series books because, instead of say dozens of books with different plots featuring the same characters, Alger s books had dozens of different boys caught up in the same plot line. But Alger s books set the stage and showed that the market for these type books was enormous.

  • William Penn's Experiment in Religious Freedom
BIBLIOGRAPHIC ESSAY William Penn’s Experiment in Religious Freedom: Resources Documenting the Colonial Religious Experience at the State Library of Pennsylvania by Iren Light Snavely ot long after his arrival in Pennsylvania in late November, 1742, it dawned on Lutheran Pastor Henry Muhlenberg that he was no longer in his native Prussia. The ecclesiastical norms and expectations of the European continent, a state church with prebends and mandatory tithes, had no meaning here. When Nhe arrived at New Hanover, Pennsylvania with an official letter of introduction from the religious authorities of the University of Halle to take charge of the Lutheran congregation there, some parishioners took “offense at the salary mentioned in . the letter.” Others complained that “they would not allow themselves to be deceived again. [W]ho knew whether I had not written the letters myself?” He found he could expect no help from the “deacons and elders . , for in religious and church matters each has the right to do what he pleases. The government has nothing to do with it and will not concern itself with such matters.”1 Muhlenberg’s story illustrates a surprising point made by author Dietmar Rothermund in his book The Layman’s Progress, namely, that William Penn’s “Holy Experiment” actually lacked a “central religious concern.” “The holiness of this experiment rested on the principle of formal and guaranteed religious tolerance rather than . any positive and definite plan.” As a result, a diverse mixture of English Quakers, German and Scots-Irish church groups, German sectarians and radical separatists settled freely throughout the province.

  • Author Promotion Guide
Author Promotion Guide Part One: Getting Started in Social Media 1. Observe. Start out by joining and watching. Pick a venue to get yourself started. It could be Twitter, an online forum, or a site dedicated to books like GoodReads, Shelfari, or LibraryThing. You don’t have to do anything at this point other than watch and learn. Be a sponge and absorb what is going on around you. Get a feel for the place. Wait until you are comfortable. 2. Participate. When someone makes a comment that you agree with, support their position. Expand on it. Give an example from your own life that illustrates the point. If you disagree, do so respectfully, offer supporting information for your opinion. 3. Contribute. Once you are comfortable talking with others, it’s time to go to the next level. Start contributing. If you read an article that people in your group might find helpful, post a link to it. If you read a book by someone in the group and liked it, tell others. Be supportive. Be helpful. 4. Form Relationships. This is what social networking is all about. Make this your “end game.” You’re not participating to sell your books. You’re here to make connections. If a fan writes a nice review, thank them. Most don’t expect to hear from authors. But after hearing from you, they’ll remember you even more. They might even share with their friends “how nice you are.” 5. Provide Information. Let the people in your group know about what’s going on in your life.
