The Delhi Medical Council examined a complaint of Shri Anil Jha Vatsa r/o B-117, Inder Enclave-2, Kirari, Delhi, forwarded by Deptt. of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of NCT of Delhi, alleging medical negligence on the part of Dr. Sanjay A. Lakra, in the treatment administered to complainant’s father late Anand Mohan Jha at Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital, Rohini, Delhi, resulting in his death.

The Delhi Medical Council perused the complaint, written statement of Dr. Sanjay A. Lakra (Specialist Medicine Dr. BSA Hospital), copy of medical records of Dr. BSA Hospital and other documents on record. The Delhi Medical Council noted that late Anand Mohan Jha (referred hereinafter as the patient) was a case of ESRD (End Stage Renal Disease), hypertension and anemia and was on maintenance Hemodialysis therapy (RRT) from various hospitals. The patient consulted Dr. Sanjay A. Lakra at Dr. BSA Hospital in the month of April 2010. Dr. Sanjay A. Lakra after examining the patient prescribed intravenous iron sucrose for the anaemia which can occur as a complication of ESRD. The said injection was administered in the dialysis unit as per protocol. The patient did not have any complaints immediately after infusion and hence was sent back home. After three days, he developed skin lesions for which he was shown to Dr. Sanjay A Lakra who referred him to skin specialists.

The Delhi Medical Council observes that the patient was suffering from a terminal illness and was on various medications. Skin lesions (Steven Johnson Syndrome) could have resulted from many of the medications which he was getting. As per the medical literature Iron Sucrose has not been found to be cause of such complications (Steven Johnson Syndrome). Prima facie, no case of medical negligence is made out against Dr. Sanjay A. Lakra in the treatment administered by him to late Anand Mohan Jha.

Complaint stands disposed.
