ICRC COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER

A.Context

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is a neutral, independent and impartial organisation whose exclusively humanitarian mission is to protect the lives and dignity of victims of war and internal violence and to provide them with assistance. The ICRC directs and coordinates the international relief activities conducted by the Red Cross and Crescent Movement in situations of armed conflict. It also endeavours to prevent suffering by promoting and strengthening international humanitarian law (IHL) and universal humanitarian principles.

The ICRC is looking for a creative, energetic communications manager to join its busy London office. The post holder will work closely with the senior communications advisor and wider team to effectively profile the work of the ICRC to audiences in the UK & Ireland. In London we cultivate active and relevant relationships which allow us to position the ICRC as a leading neutral, impartial humanitarian actor in conflict-affected communities. The team works closely with our Movement partners, the British Red Cross and the Irish Red Cross.

B.Job description & key responsibilities

  • Produces engaging multimedia content which showcases the work of the mission and highlights the ICRC’s global operational activities
  • Manages a communication plan to profile senior leadership visits and key events, regularly injecting our thinking into public discourse on humanitarian issues in the UK & Ireland
  • Manages our UK & Ireland twitter account, drafting, editing and repurposing content targeted at range of key audiences including the general public
  • Provides regular communications support for UK & Ireland-focused activities, managing strategy, refreshing messaging, supporting marketing efforts and working as a media spokesperson when required
  • Works closely with communication colleagues from the British Red Cross and Irish Red Cross to liaise on timely and accurate ICRC content
  • Crafts news releases, story pitches and proactive media alerts, responding quickly and calmly to media enquiries
  • Manages relationships with digital colleagues at HQ and other ICRC sites, involving collaboration on content strategy and scheduling
  • Produces weekly media monitoring and environment scanning updates
  • Helps manage the mission’s stock of communication products and designs new print materials for the UK & Ireland mission
  • Works as a photographer at key events

C.Minimum required knowledge, experience and abilities

  • University degree in a relevant field
  • Demonstrable writing experience
  • Good knowledge of issues related to humanitarian action
  • A strong interest in international affairs
  • Understands the UK, Ireland and global media landscapes
  • Has a good media contacts book
  • Self-starter able to work both independently and within a small team
  • Experience of working in a complex organisation, demonstrating a high-level of diplomacy when liaising and negotiating with internal and external stakeholders
  • Sound experience of developing and implementing communication strategies
  • High degree of organisation and ability to work towards tight deadlines
  • Able to master complex topics quickly and translate them into simple language and powerful messages
