SELECTIVE UNIT 2 (S02)

(Rulers, Explorers, and Inventors)

(July 2015)

Unit Statement: The student will study influential rulers, explorers, and inventors who lived somewhere between the 1200s-1600s or 1600s-1900s. The student will select a leader, identify his/her main achievements, and analyze how their achievements shaped society. It is recommended that this unit is opened after all the essential units have been completed. Then, the student will be able to look at the list of rulers, explorers, and inventors they have previously studied to help them select a topic of research.

Essential Question/s:

Five Themes of Geography Focus: Movement

Essential Outcomes: (must be assessed for mastery)

1.  The Student Will identify several (a minimum of three) influential rulers, explorers or inventors and will select one for further research.

2.  TSW record a brief biography of the leader.

3.  TSW examine the leader’s main accomplishments (taking special note of any obstacles the leader has had to overcome in order to be successful).

4.  TSW research the impact the work of the ruler, explorer, or inventor had on other leaders and/or people groups.

5.  TSW present their findings before the class.

6.  TSW locate and summarize current events related to the unit of study.

Introduced Outcomes: (taught, but not assessed)

1.  The Student Will assess how the ruler, explorer, or inventor is remembered by their nation.

2.  TSW evaluate the ruler’s, explorer’s, or inventor’s legacy in the present day.

1.  The Student Will identify key terms and concepts.

2.  TSW apply the 5 Themes of Geography.

3.  TSW list historical events on a timeline to compare people and events over time.

Suggested Activities and Strategies:

●  This unit can be taught at the same time students are learning how to write research papers in literacy.

●  Students can work together in groups to film a version of the ruler’s, explorer’s, and inventor’s life.

Cross-curricular Suggestions:

Reading:

●  The students can read the works of the ruler, inventor, or explorer they are studying.

●  The students can read literature on what the leader has accomplished. They should note any direct quotes from the leader.The student can explain the meaning of the quote.

Writing:

●  The student can write a research paper, for their research unit, on their leader of choice.

●  Their findings can be revised and edited, as a way to improve their editing skills.

Suggested Assessment Tools:

1.  Attached rubric or teacher-generated rubric that assesses ALL essential outcomes (TSWs). An effective rubric is presented and discussed with the student at the beginning of the unit, referred back to throughout the unit, and used to assess at the end. Students will collaborate with peers and the teacher to assess mastery of the unit with final judgement by the teacher.

2.  Chapter tests and activities can be used to evaluate student mastery of TSWs from the textbook.

To receive a ‘B’, the student must show ‘B’ level mastery on ALL Essential Outcomes (TSW’s).

To receive an ‘A’, the student must show ‘A’ level mastery on 2 of 3 available TSW’s and ‘B’ level mastery on all TSW’s.

TSW examine the leader’s main accomplishments(taking special note of any obstacles the leader has had to overcome in order to succeed). / Additionally, I can infer how these obstacles influenced their work. I can connect what I learned about their life to what they accomplished. / I can identify the leader’s main accomplishments. I have noted the obstacles the leader has had to overcome to succeed.
4. TSW research the impact the work of the ruler, explorer, or inventor had on other leaders and/or people groups. / In addition, I can use specific examples of how the ruler, explorer, or inventor influenced other leaders and people groups. / I can explain the impact the leader had on other leaders and people groups. I can note the impact their life had on society.
5. TSW present their findings before the class. / I am able to present my findings in a clear voice, with eye contact, with confidence, and through a interesting medium.
