The group incorporates Malone Lodge Hotel & Apartments, Belfast – 115 rooms & 60 staff; Ratheane Nursing Home, Coleraine – 78 beds & 100 staff; Leabank Nursing home, Ballycastle – 52 beds & 60 staff and Arlington Nursing Home, Belfast – 25 beds & 30 staff. Parkmanor Nursing Home, Dunmurry opened in August 2010 with 78 bedrooms and estimated staffing of 100 at full capacity.

Role Summary:

The responsibility of a Ancillary Assistant is to work within the Housekeeping, Laundry and Kitchen Departments as and when required. The job description for each role is outlined below.

Essential Criteria:  Must have a good command of written and spoken English and a valid work permit  Ability to communicate with the elderly  Ability to work set hours, flexible to meet the needs of the organization  Good General Health (medically fit)

Desirable Criteria:  Previous experience in a similar position  Moving and handling of heavy weights  Experience of ironing and sewing

Position Housekeeper – Day Duty Reporting line Head Housekeeper Hours of work Day Duty Shift Pattern

Basic Function: To maintain a high standard of cleanliness throughout the Home and comply with all infection control measures operating within the Home under the Nursing Home minimum standards.

Professional responsibilities

 At beginning of shift present yourself fit for work in uniform. Collect trolley and cleaning materials from locked cupboard.

 Trolley and cleaning solutions never to be left unattended.

 Daily cleaning of bedrooms, sitting rooms, treatment room, sluice rooms, bathrooms, toilets, offices, lifts, corridors and hall.

 Bathrooms, toilets and sluices all cleaned with appropriate cleaning solutions daily. Refill hand wash and towels. Ensure wet floor signs always used to alert staff/patients to hazard of wet floor.

 Sitting rooms cleaned and tidied first thing each morning before patients are up. Wipe all chairs with appropriate solution.

 Dining room – deep clean weekly and wash floor daily.

 Bedrooms – wipe all hard surfaces daily, tidy materials and refill hand towels. Deep clean bedrooms according to rota (and after each patient).

 Vacuum carpet or mop floors.

 Ensure curtains are washed/dry cleaned after each patient and at least once per year.

 Any other domestic duties which contribute to the wellbeing of the residents and the smooth running of the Home.

 Ensure a high standard of cleanliness is maintained at all times in areas of responsibility.

 Continues the Company’s policy of being polite and courteous to all doctors, pharmacists, external medical staff, patient’s relatives and friends, religious practitioners and the Northern Health Board Nursing Home Inspection Unit Team.

 Continually updates oneself on current procedures through the use of literature available in the Home and attends internal and external courses when requested by the Head Housekeeper/Matron.

 Adheres to all COSHH regulations and is compliant with the Company’s Health and Safety Procedures.  Complies with all infection control measures operating within the Home.

 Wears protective clothing as required.

 Ensures proper disposal of all waste materials.

 Adheres to the fire and accident prevention policy of the Home.

 Takes responsibility for the protection of vulnerable adults and reports to management where they consider a person has caused harm or posed risk of harm to any patient.

 Observes confidentiality at all times.

Administrative responsibilities

 Ensures the economic use of all supplies and equipment. Maintaining all these resources in a satisfactory condition and reporting any faults/breakages.

 Completes and maintains relevant paperwork.

 Reports all accidents, complaints and defects in equipment to the Head Housekeeper.

 Ensures the safe keeping of patient’s belongings and valuables in accordance with the Home policy.

 Does not accept gifts from patients or witness a patient’s will.

Position Laundry Assistant Reporting line Head Housekeeper/Assistant Nurse Manager/Nurse Manager Hours of work Day Duty Shift Pattern

Basic Function: To maintain a high standard laundry service to all residents within the home.

Professional responsibilities

 Receipt of dirty linen and its despatch to the laundry for sorting and sluicing.

 Washing and pressing of household and bed linen.

 The washing and pressing of personal clothing for residents (all woollens to be washed by hand).

 Collect all items of personal clothing or linen needing repairs.

 Repair any items of clothing, and label any residents clothing as required with name tags.

 Report damage to personal clothing and linen in washing and ironing processes.

 Observe correct use of equipment and machines in line with the Health & Safety at Work and COSHH policies.

 Keep laundry clean and tidy. All soiled linen holders should be returned to sluice/bathrooms.

 Ensure all items of clothing are clearly marked and returned to each resident’s appropriate drawer or wardrobe.

 Report to the primary nurse any resident who needs any particular items of clothing.

 Continue the Company’s policy of being polite and courteous to all doctors, pharmacists, external medical staff, patients relatives and friends, religious practitioners and the Northern Health Board Nursing Home Inspection Unit Team.

 Continually update oneself on current procedures through the use of literature available in the home and attend internal and external courses when requested by the Head Housekeeper/Assistant Nurse Manager/Nurse Manager.

 Any other duties delegated from time to time by the Head Housekeeper/Assistant Nurse Manager/Nurse Manager in accordance with the grade.

Position Kitchen Assistant Reporting line Cook/Head Cook Hours of work Day Duty Shift Pattern

Basic Function: To assist with preparation and delivery of wholesome and nutritious meals to all residents.

Professional responsibilities

 Assisting Cook with preparation and serving meals: 1. Ensuring all crockery, utensils and cooking equipment are washed and ready for use of each meal. 2. Preparation of tables in dining room and trolleys for carrying food each meal time.

 Ensure food is appropriately managed with regard to checking on arrival for quantity, quality and use by date. Liaise with Cook if any problems.

 Ensure food is stored appropriately and stock rotation carried out. Inform Cook of any problems.

 Ensure appropriate waste disposal of used foods and bags/bins emptied daily.

 Maintain high standard of hygiene in kitchen and store with records of cleaning maintained.

 Ensure meals served as attractively as possible in presentation. Liaise with Cook to assist with serving.

 Liaise with Nursing Staff to ensure prompt serving of meals.

 Co-operate with all kitchen staff to ensure rota is adequately covered.
