Nova Scotia Youth Conservation Corps Crew Positions for

Halifax Regional Municipality

The Nova Scotia Youth Conservation Corps (NSYCC), a program of the Department of Environment and Labour, has been in operation since 1989. The NSYCC provides Nova Scotian youth aged 17 - 24 with training and employment opportunities in the environmental field, while providing services to Nova Scotian communities for the enhancement of the local environment. The NSYCC provides Nova Scotian youth with environmental work experience, an enhanced appreciation of the environment and their community, and develops skills for lifelong learning. These skills include team building, leadership skills, increased knowledge for future employment and/or education ventures, and the ability to give back to the community and environment. Specifically, there is summer project work related to watershed management, waste resource management, pollution prevention, climate change and environmental education & interpretation.

Qualifications required to work with the Corps: In accordance with the mandate of the NSYCC, you must be a team player, possess an understanding of environmental issues in Nova Scotia, be able to do physically demanding work, be willing to work outdoors under a variety of weather conditions, be between the ages of 17 and 24 and have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Access to a vehicle will be required to attend our late-June training camp in Truro (mileage to and from camp will be reimbursed at the provincial government rate). All employees must be returning to high school, university or other recognized educational institution in fall 2005.

Position Description: There are two positions available for this project in partnership with the Ecology Action Centre. The Sustainable Transportation Ambassadors project will involve the development, implementation and assessment of a new educational program aimed at promoting sustainable transportation in the HRM. Successful applicants will act as educators, ambassadors and models of sustainable transportation choices. Applicants must be comfortable cycling in HRM and ideally own a bicycle. Experience with any of the following would be an advantage: delivering workshops, working with the media, planning events, repairing/maintaining bikes or cars, inspiring people.

Number of Positions: 2

Duration of Position: June 27th - August 26th 2005

Rate of Pay: $8.50/hour; approximately 35 hours a week
