HOSPITAL INFORMATION VOLUNTEER

Introduction

Age UK Redbridge, Barking & Havering holds weekly information outreach sessions at King George Hospital and hopes to do the same at Queens Hospital, Romford and Whipps Cross Hospital, Waltham Forest.

Role Description

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

·  Collect display board and box of literature each week from storage in hospital and make up display table, liaising with hospital’s own information service as appropriate

·  Maintain a record of literature and inform senior manager at Ilford office when supplies of any leaflet are running low

·  Greet all enquirers, assisting them to find appropriate literature and answering queries by signposting them to appropriate services, especially Age UK Redbridge, Barking & Havering’s own services

·  Forward all referrals for further advice/information or for Age UK Redbridge, Barking & Havering’s services to senior manager (services)

·  Maintain record of all enquiries on required form, noting post code, gender, ethnicity, age of all enquirers and what literature was supplied, what enquiries made

·  Pack up box of literature and display board and return to correct storage place in the hospital

Person Specification

·  Responsible attitude

·  Good communication skills essential

·  Ability to read and understand the literature that people are asking for and answer basic information enquiries

·  Ability to keep to limits of role and not seek to give advice but make appropriate onward referrals

·  Ability to keep accurate records

·  Willingness to liaise closely with senior manager (services) to ensure quality information service

·  Understanding of and empathy with the needs of older people

·  Patience and sensitivity

·  Reliability

·  Ability to speak an additional language (desirable, but not essential)

Hours of Work: 3 hours (approx) on one morning per week
