Ms. Leonti (951) 736-3241 ext. 25202 [email protected] 11TH GRADE SYLLABUS Language Arts 3 I. GRADING POLICY: Students’ grades will be based upon a cumulative point system. The final grade for the semester is determined by computing a percentage of a student’s points. A passing grade on the final exam does NOT guarantee a passing grade in the class. *No extra credit assignments will be given. 90-100=A 80-89=B 70-79=C 60-69=D ** Students’ participation will contribute to their success; thus, good attendance is mandatory.**

II. MODULES include instruction in critical reading, analysis of rhetorical strategies, vocabulary, research methods, documentation conventions, and analytical writing based on information learned from and in response to the assigned texts. Each module concludes with a writing assignment, a project and/or presentation.

1st Semester: Introduction to Rhetorical Strategies; Internet Piracy Performance Task; Early Americans; Facing Our Fears: The Crucible by Arthur Miller; Writing Freedom: Democracy & Speeches

2nd Semester: Research Unit; Individual & Society; To Clone or Not to Clone?; Modern Period in Literature; Ordinary Lives, Extraordinary Tales; Novel Unit: Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck III. VIDEOS: The following videos or excerpts will be shown to enhance students’ understanding of the curriculum. A&E Biographies The Crucible (Daniel Day-Lewis & Winona Ryder) Guilty by Suspicion (excerpt - Robert Deniro) Of Mice and Men (Gary Sinise & John Malkovich)

IV. WRITING: Argumentative Essays, Argumentative Speech, Expository Essays, Autobiographical Narratives, Research Paper (2nd semester) Writing assignments must be TYPED & in MLA Format, except timed writings.

V. HOMEWORK: Go to Canvas or my NHS Website *Bring pens, highlighters & post-its to class. Homework will be assigned at least 3-4 times/week and will occasionally be given on weekends and during vacations. All assignments must be turned in at the BEGINNING of the period with a title, student’s full name, period and date in the upper left hand corner. They must be neatly completed in blue or black ink on white, lined paper. No pencil! Do your own work! Working together on homework is not allowed, unless it is a group project. Academic Dishonesty/Copying/Plagiarism will NOT be tolerated = 0 Incomplete Assignments = 0 *LATE WORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. (This includes unexcused tardies & truancies.)

VI. MAKE-UP WORK: Students will be allowed ONE day per all day excused absence to make up work. (Weekends and vacations are included as make-up days. Example: If absent Tues., receive work on Wed., it is due on Thurs.) Write Absent and date of absence on work. Students are responsible for checking my website or Canvas for their classwork and homework and for getting any worksheets/handouts needed to complete their assignments. If students miss class because of a field trip, on-campus activity, appointment, sporting event, testing, leaving early/ arriving late or ACP, they are still required to turn work due either prior to the absence or on the due date. They must also complete classwork and homework assigned that day. If there is an extended period of absence, he/she must see me to make arrangements for making up work and setting a due date. *I’m available to help students during most lunches & after school.

Any student absent on the day an assignment is due is responsible for turning it in at the BEGINNING of the period when he/she returns to class. However, MAJOR PROJECTS are to be turned in on the due date, regardless of an absence. The assignment must be in my box in the office, initialed by the receptionist including the time received, by your class period. You may e-mail it to me. This will be your receipt of work completed on time. Turn in a hard copy of the assignment on the day you return from your absence. We will also submit essays to Turnitin through Canvas.

VII. RULES OF CONDUCT: 1. Follow directions the FIRST time they are given. 2. Be in your assigned seat BEFORE the bell rings or you are tardy. Remain in your seat until I excuse you. 3. Respect others and their personal belongings; Use appropriate language-no name calling, swearing or teasing. 4. No cell phones or other electronic devices are to be used in the classroom. No food or drinks other than water. 5. Homework is to be completed at home not in class before the bell rings. If a student chooses to break a rule: 1st time: Warning (1st unexcused tardy = Warning) 2ndtime: Move Seat/Stay after class (2nd unexcused tardy = 1 hour detention ) 3rdtime: 1-hour detention (3rd unexcused tardy = 1 hour detention/call home) 4th time: Call Home/1-hour detention (4th unexcused tardy = Referral/Saturday School/call home) 5thtime: Referral/Saturday School/ACP (5th unexcused tardy = ACP/call home) TRUANCY: 1 Hour Detention (unexcused absence for L. Arts) Excessive Excused Tardies will not be tolerated. RESTROOM PASS: One per Quarter I have informed my students about my classroom policies and would appreciate if you would review this syllabus with your student. It is in their best interest that we work together in relationship to his/her schooling.
