Block Wire Brush: A heavy duty steel wire brush, used for scale removal during forging

Weight: Nil, Price: $25

Cold Chisel: A cold chisel is a tool made of tempered steel used for cutting 'cold' metals, meaning that they are not used in conjunction with heating torches, forges, etc. Cold chisels are used to remove waste metal when a very smooth finish is not required or when the work cannot be done easily with other tools, such as a hacksaw, file, bench shears or power tools. Cold chisels come in a variety of sizes, from fine engraving tools that are tapped with very light hammers, to massive tools that are driven with sledgehammers. Although the vast majority of cold chisels are made of steel, a few are manufactured from beryllium copper, for use in special situations where non-sparking tools are required. There are four common types of cold chisel:

Cold Flat Chisel: The flat chisel is the most widely known type, which is used to cut bars and rods to reduce surfaces and to cut sheet metal which is too thick or difficult to cut with snips. Weight: Nil, Price: $10

Cold Cross Cut Chisel: The cross cut chisel is used for cutting grooves and slots. The blade narrows behind the cutting edge to provide clearance. Weight: Nil, Price: $10

Cold Round Nose Chisel: The round nose chisel is used for cutting semi-circular grooves for oil ways in bearings. Weight: Nil, Price: $10

Cold Diamond Point Chisel: The diamond point chisel is used for cleaning out corners or difficult places and pulling over centre punch marks wrongly placed for drilling. Weight: Nil, Price: $10

Crucible: This holds molten metals (steel/copper), and can be attached to a crane to move molten metal out of the forge, and cast it into the mould in a controlled manner. The price depends on the size and how advanced the pouring technique. For $100 you get an insulated bucket with handles, for $5000, an industrial 500L steel casting bucket. Weight: 10 kg Price: $100-5000

Files/Rasps: A file is a hand tool used to shape material by cutting. A file typically takes the form of a hardened steel bar, mostly covered with a series of sharp, parallel ridges or teeth. Most files have a narrow, pointed tang at one end to which a handle can be fitted. The rasp is a related tool which is generally larger and has raised, pointed teeth on its surface rather than straight ridges.

Mill File: Mill files are used to create smooth and clean finishes of metal pieces. Weight: Nil, Price: $6

Half Round Rasp: Half round rasps are used for fine detailing and intricate shaping of metal pieces. Weight: Nil, Price: $6

Half Round File: Half round files are used for filing both flat and concave metal pieces. Weight: Nil, Price: $6

Round File: Round files are used for filing and shaping of metal pieces of metal pieces.Weight: Nil, Price: $6

Slim Taper File: Slim taper files are used to file in between saw blade teeth to reinvigorate worn down saw blades. Weight: Nil, Price: $6

Firepots: Firepot or hearth a place where the burning fuel can be contained over or against a pipe through which air can be forced into the fire opening. Weight: 200 kg Price: $500

Forge: The forge is the fireplace of a blacksmith's shop. It provides the means to keep the fire contained and controlled. The quality of the forge is determined by its cost, a gas fired industrial forge from a steel foundry will run into the 10's of thousands of dollars, and are immobile.

Forge Fuel:

Bagged Smithing Coal, 50 lbs. Bag: This coal is uniform, clean, and carefully prepared. It cokes perfectly, boasts a high heat value, and offers sound and clean welds and forgings. The best all around fuel for blacksmithing is soft coal. You need to get the coal about the size of a marble, if this is not possible; the larger chunks need be broken up prior to using them. Weight: 50 lbs, Price: $21

Bagged Smithing Coke, 50 lbs. Bag: Coke offers high heat, high efficiency, and low smoke. Because coke burns hotter, it needs a shallower flame. Weight: 50 lbs, Price: $24

Cooking Charcoal, 12 lbs. Bag: Store bought "cookout" charcoal can also be used for light forging. Again the air blast tends to blow the ashes around. Weight: 12lbs, Price: $20

Wood: The easiest to find but not as good as coal, one problem with wood is that the ashes are always being blown about by the air blast. It also burns fast. Weight: 1 to 100 lbs, Price: Free

Fullers: Swages and fullers are shaping tools Opposite to the swage in some respects is the fuller which may take a number of shapes and is driven into the metal with a hammer. Together they will quickly stamp a spoon shape on the end of a bar. Weight 27 Kg, Price $300

Swages: Swages and fullers are shaping tools. Swages are either stand alone tools or fit the "hardie hole" on the face of the anvil. The metal is shaped by being driven into the form of the swage. Together they will quickly stamp a spoon shape on the end of a bar.
