A 25 fireman for the railroad, her uncle provided a good home; and 26 27 Whereas, after high school, the young Ida attended Shanklin 28 Boarding School and met the love of her life, Jake Martin. She 29 became a licensed practical nurse while at Johns Hopkins Hospital 30 in Baltimore, Maryland; and 31 32 Whereas, on October 30, 1948, Ida and Jacob were joined in holy 33 matrimony, God blessing their union with four children, Richard I 34 (deceased), Richard II, Constance, and Crawford; and 35 36 Whereas, in 1978, Jacob and Ida Martin retired from Detroit, 37 Michigan, to Jacob’s hometown of Bluffton, where Ida quickly 38 became a welcome part of the community. Joining Campbell 39 Chapel AME Church, she became very active there and found her 40 greatest joy in service with the Women’s Missionary Society 41 (WMS). Ida became WMS president; she was a member of the 42 stewardess board and the combined choir and served as a class

[795] 2 1 leader; she was an advisor to the Young Voices of Praise Choir, a 2 Vacation Bible School arts and crafts teacher, and an avid student 3 at her Bible study and church school; and 4 5 Whereas, Mrs. Martin’s mission work extended to all levels of the 6 connectional church. For her dedicated service, she was named a 7 Torch Lighter of the Beaufort District of the South Carolina 8 Annual Conference of the AME Church; and 9 10 Whereas, at the age of sixty, Mrs. Martin founded Bluffton Self 11 Help, a nonprofit organization that assists those facing hunger and 12 poverty, and she has been recognized for her work at the 13 community, state, and national level. In 1990, she was named 14 South Carolina Volunteer of the Year, and in 2011 she received the 15 coveted Presidential Citizens Medal, one of the nation’s highest 16 civilian honors. Further, in Bluffton, April 4 has been celebrated as 17 Ida Martin Day since April 2011, and the Town of Bluffton Wall 18 of Honor features Mrs. Martin; and 19 20 Whereas, among her many other honors is the 2012 Hilton Head 21 Bluffton Chamber of Commerce Alice Glenn Doughtie Citizenship 22 Award; and 23 24 Whereas, Mrs. Martin will be remembered for her big heart, her 25 faith in her fellow man, and the strong work ethic that moved her 26 forward even as her body tired; and 27 28 Whereas, she leaves to cherish her memory her beloved and 29 devoted husband Jacob “Jake” Martin; a daughter, Constance 30 Martin; two sons, Richard (Lois) Martin and Crawford Martin; six 31 grandchildren; three greatgrandchildren; and a host of other 32 relatives and friends. She will be greatly missed. Now, therefore, 33 34 Be it resolved by the Senate: 35 36 That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, 37 express their profound sorrow upon the death of Ida Magwood 38 Martin of Bluffton and extend the deepest sympathy to her family 39 and many friends. 40 41 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to 42 Mr. Jake Martin for the family. 43 XX
