[1282-2] 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A SENATE RESOLUTION 10 11 TO COMMEND THE REPUBLIC OF CHINA (TAIWAN) FOR 12 ITS RELATIONS WITH THE UNITED STATES AND FOR 13 OTHER PURPOSES. 14 15 Whereas, in March of 2008, Taiwan held its fourth direct 16 presidential election and witnessed a peaceful transition of political 17 power, paving the way for Taiwan to serve as a beacon of 18 democracy to Asia and beyond; and 19 20 Whereas, Taiwan and the United States are longstanding allies 21 who both deeply cherish the values of freedom, democracy, human 22 rights, and the rule of law; and 23 24 Whereas, the State of South Carolina and Taiwan have enjoyed 25 long, cordial, and mutually beneficial sisterstate relations since 26 1981 and a friendship that continues to strengthen with each 27 passing year; and 28 29 Whereas, Taiwan is the United States’ ninthlargest trading partner, 30 and the United States is Taiwan’s thirdlargest trading partner; and 31 32 Whereas, today, the government of Taiwan has committed itself to 33 achieving peace and coprosperity with mainland China; and 34 35 Whereas, Taiwan is an active member in the international 36 community, with a long history of commitment to international 37 health and humanitarian aid. Now, therefore, 38 39 Be it resolved by the Senate: 40

[1282] 3 1 That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, 2 commend the Republic of China (Taiwan) for its relations with the 3 United States and for other purposes. 4 5 Be it further resolved that the members of this body commend and 6 support the democratization efforts of the Republic of China 7 (Taiwan), as well as Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the 8 World Health Organization (WHO), the International Civil 9 Aviation Organization (ICAO), and the United Nations Framework 10 Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). 11 12 Be it further resolved that the members of this body hereby 13 welcome all opportunities to develop the special sisterstate bond 14 between South Carolina and Taiwan, and encourage further 15 cultural, educational, and business exchanges between the citizens 16 of South Carolina and Taiwan. 17 18 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 19 Mr. Larry R. L. Tseng, Director General of the Taipei Economic 20 and Cultural Office in Atlanta. 21 XX 22
