The job holder’s responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young person’s for whom s/he is responsible, or with whom s/he comes into contact will be to adhere to and ensure compliance with the relevant Cognita Safeguarding; Child Protection Policy and Procedures at all times. If in the course of carrying out the duties of the role, the job holder identifies any instance that a child is suffering or likely to suffer significant harm either at school or at home, s/he must report any concerns to the School’s Child Protection Officer/Designated Safeguarding Lead or to the Head or indeed to the Regional CEO so that a referral can be made accordingly to the relevant third party services. Job Summary

Key Responsibilities

 Report to the Head of Preparatory School.  Support the work of the classroom teachers and communicate with them professionally in regard to children’s progress.  Support the Preparatory School class teachers in the implementation of school policies, procedures and the development of the School’s distinctive ethos.  Liaise with the Preparatory School class teachers on matters of Health and Safety, equipment and resources.  Promoting safeguarding of children in your care and relaying any areas of concern to the DSL (Designated Safeguarding Lead).

Academic Curriculum

Within the school’s academic policy to:

 Work with pupils; either one-to-one support or in small groups. This includes a range of subjects and activities, such as literacy, numeracy and science support, hearing readers, assisting pupils so they can use practical resources.  Support pupils with learning needs or disabilities  Help prepare the classroom for lessons, including putting up displays  Monitor, evaluate and report on the progress of individual children to class teachers  To remember that every child is unique and will learn at different rates, times and in different ways.

Pastoral Care

Within the school’s pastoral policy to:

 Maintain good pupil behaviour and promote self-discipline among pupils, with a view to their well- being and safety.  Deal appropriately with sickness and injury.  Follow the school’s code of conduct which promotes mutual respect to all; pupils, parents and staff.  Adhere to the Health & Safety policy document in the Staff Handbook.

Administration & Organisation

Within the school’s administrative policy to carry out the following:

 Planning with classroom teachers as necessary  Attending team meetings and other school functions  Carrying out supervisory duties as required.  Help prepare the classroom for lessons, including putting up displays and maintaining a tidy and stimulating school environment.

Communication

Within the school’s communication policy to:

 Maintain good communication as necessary with colleagues, interested parties, pupils and parents.  Communicate constructively and effectively with parents both orally and with written messages in the pupils’ diary. Professional Development

Within the school’s development policy to:

 Review own performance and identify self-development needs in discussion with your line manager and colleagues as appropriate.  Attend in-service training courses. There are 6 in-service days.  Participate in Cognita Schools Performance Management Reviews (PMRs) as required.

Person Specification

Education and Skills:

Essential education:

 Good reading, writing and numeracy skills with recognised qualifications

Desirable education:

 The ideal candidate will have an NVQ Level 2 or above and GCSE Grade C in English and Mathematics.

Essential skills:

 Working one-to-one or with small groups of pupils  Supporting pupils with learning difficulties or disabilities  Preparing the classroom for lessons eg setting up equipment  Tidying up and keeping the classroom in good order  Creating displays of pupils’ work  Helping on school outings or at school events  Carrying out supervisory duties as required  Establish and develop appropriate relationships with children and their parents/carers.  Promote a positive working environment;  Be able to use your own initiative

Desirable skills:

 Evidence of experience of working with children Experience:

Essential experience:

 Evidence of working with primary aged (5-11 years) children

Desirable experience:

 Experience of working in a primary/ preparatory school or nursery environment
