GIRLS GONE WILD: THE FLAPPER DRESS BY DORIS M. BENAVIDES 2ND PLACE FRESHMAN CATEGORY The Flapper Dress was considered a symbol of sexual liberation during the Roaring 20’s. The artifact this essay will center upon is an iris colored flapper dress made out of silk and cotton, decorated with lace bedazzled with pearls and thick fabric. The owner of this dress is unknown. This dress is currently being held in the Museum of Southern History. At a glance, this piece might seem as any other dress from a time personally unknown to contemporary generations. However, the flapper dress became one of the arms the defying women of the 1920’s used to make their mark in American history. In previous generations, women were taught to speak softly, carry lipstick, and wear their hair down. Through the impact of the flapper girls, those days became history. To begin with, the 1920’s were a period in American history that incorporated the fastest economic expansion in United States history, a new source of values, modernism, and a crash that changed the outlook of the United States until this day. The economy of the time incorporated rising stock prices, corporate profits, personal income, and gross domestic product (GDP). During this time, automobiles became largely available, movies, invented in the 1880’s, made debuts, dance music included jazz, and young, modern women joined the provocative culture of the time. Fashion played a crucial role during this time, and women were no longer content having to wear layers upon layers of clothing, nor long haircuts that became burdensome. -

British American Tobacco’s submission to the WHO’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control This is the submission of the British American Tobacco group of companies commenting on the WHO’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. Executive summary • The WHO’s proposed ‘Framework Convention on Tobacco Control’ is fundamentally flawed and will not achieve its objectives. • The tobacco industry, along with other industries involved in the manufacture and distribution of legal but risky products, is the subject of considerable public attention. It is important that the debate about tobacco remains open, objective, constructive and free from opportunistic criticism if we are effectively to address the real issues associated with tobacco. • British American Tobacco is responsible tobacco. We seek to operate in partnership with governments, who are significant stakeholders in our business, and other interested parties, based on our open acknowledgement that we make a risky product and therefore support sensible regulation. • British American Tobacco shares the World Health Organisation’s desire to reduce the health impact of tobacco use. Cigarettes can cause several health problems and can even cause death. Aside from conventional cigarettes, e-cigarettes and shisha are starting to get the spotlight. The types of cigarettes include conventional cigarettes, electric cigarettes and shisha can cause health problems to both smokers and the people around them. The purpose of this study was to determine smoking behavior and the use of cigarette types in students. This research was quantitative descriptive. The population in this study were students who have smoked either the conventional, electric or shisha. The sampling technique used was accidental sampling with 384 students as the samples. The instrument in this study used a questionnaire that was independently developed by researchers with a total of 14 questions. The results of the data obtained were then analyzed using descriptive analysis presented in the form of a percentage. Based on the results of the study it was found that non-health students (90.6%) were more likely to smoke than health students (9.4%). -
