Specific Disease Exclusion for Schools
SPECIFIC DISEASE EXCLUSION FOR SCHOOLS See individual fact sheets for more information on the diseases listed below. Bed Bugs None. Acute Bronchitis (Chest Until fever is gone (without the use of a fever reducing medication) and Cold)/Bronchiolitis the child is well enough to participate in routine activities. Campylobacteriosis None, unless the child is not feeling well and/or has diarrhea and needs to use the bathroom frequently. Exclusion may be necessary during outbreaks. Staff with Campylobacter may be restricted from working in food service. Call your local health department to see if these restrictions apply. Chickenpox Until all blisters have dried into scabs; usually by day 6 after the rash began. Chickenpox can occur even if someone has had the varicella vaccine. These are referred to as breakthrough infections. Breakthrough infections develop more than 42 days after vaccination, are usually less severe, have an atypical presentation (low or no fever, less than 50 skin lesions), and are shorter in duration (4 to 6 days). Bumps, rather than blisters, may develop; therefore, scabs may not present. Breakthrough cases should be considered infectious. These cases should be excluded until all sores (bumps/blisters/scabs) have faded or no new sores have occurred within a 24-hour period, whichever is later. Sores do not need to be completely resolved before the case is allowed to return. Conjunctivitis (Pinkeye) No exclusion, unless the child has a fever or is not healthy enough to participate in routine activities. -

This was the first case of borreliosis in Brazil, acquired in Cotia County, State of São Paulo, Brazil. Both children had tick bite history, presented erythema migrans, fever, arthralgia, mialgia, and developed positive serology (ELISA and Western-blotting) directed to Borrelia burgdorferi G 39/40 and Babesia bovis antigens, mainly of IgM class antibodies, suggestive of acute disease. Also, high frequencies of antibodies to B. bovis was observed in a group of 59 Brazilian patients with Lyme borreliosis (25.4%), when compared with that obtained in a normal control group (10.2%) (chi-square = 5.6; p < 0.05). Interestingly, both children presented the highest titers for IgM antibodies directed to both infective diseases, among all patients with Lyme borreliosis. Herpes Gladiatorum (HG)? - HG Is a Skin Infection Caused by the Herpes Simplex Type 1 Virus
Herpes Gladitorum Fact Sheet 1. What is herpes gladiatorum (HG)? - HG is a skin infection caused by the Herpes simplex type 1 virus. 2. How do you get HG? - This skin infection is spread by direct skin-to-skin contact. Wrestling with HG lesions will spread this infection to other wrestlers. 3. What is HG illness like? a. Generally, lesions appear within eight days after exposure to an infected person, but in some cases the lesions take longer to appear. Good personal hygiene and thorough cleaning and disinfecting of all equipment are essential to helping prevent the spread of this and other skin infections. b. All wrestlers with skin sores or lesions should be referred to a physician for evaluation and possible treatment. These individuals should not participate in practice or competition until their lesions have healed. c. Before skin lesions appear, some people have a sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, fever or tingling on the skin. HG lesions appear as a cluster of blisters and may be on the face, extremities or trunk. Seek medical care immediately for lesions in or around the eye. d. Every wrestler should be evaluated by a knowledgeable, unbiased adult for infectious rashes and excluded from practice and competition if suspicious rashes are present until evaluation and clearance by a competent professional. 4. What are the serious complications from HG? - The virus can “hide out” in the nerves and reactivate later, causing another infection. Generally, recurrent infections are less severe and don’t last as long. However, a recurring infection is just as contagious as the original infection, so the same steps need to be taken to prevent infecting others. -

El-Dawela 2 مسح لﻻضطرابات اجللدية لدى الولدان: مﻻحظة رسيرية يف حضانة يف مركز طبي يف مرص عبري أمحد عبد املنعم، رهيام عز الدولة الرشقاوي اخلﻻصة:مل َ ْت َظ اﻻضطرابات اجللدية لدى الولدان بدراسات جيدة يف مرص. وقد هدفت الباحثتان إىل دراسة أنامط التغريات اجللدية يف عينة من ِ الولدان املرصيني، وهي دراسة وصفية استباقية أترابية شملت ستة مئة وليد يف َّحضانة يف مستشفى جامعة سوهاج، َّوتضمنت الفحص اجللدي خﻻل اﻷيام اخلمسة اﻷوىل بعد الوﻻدة. وقد تم كشف اﻻضطرابات اجللدية لدى 240 ًوليدا )40%( ولوحظت الومحات لدى 100 وليد )%16.7(، ومعظمها من النمط ذي اخلﻻيا امليﻻنية )لطخات منغولية لدى 11.7% مع ومحات وﻻدية ذات ميﻻنية اخلﻻيا لدى 2.7%(. كام ُك ِش َف ْت العداوى الفطرية اجللدية، ومنها داء َّاملبيضات الفموية، وعدوى الفطريات يف مناطق احلفاظات أو َالـم َذح الناجم عن عدوى َّاملبيضات يف اﻷرفاغ )أصل الفخذ(، وذلك لدى 13.3%، ُوكشفت بعض العداوى اجلرثومية يف 1.3%من الولدان. وتشري املقارنات مع الدراسات اﻷخرى يف أرجاء العامل إىل معدل مرتفع للعدوى بالفطريات مع معدل منخفض للومحات الوﻻدية يف دراستنا للولدان، وتويص الباحثتان بإجراء تقييم روتيني جلدي للولدان، ّوﻻسيام يف ضوء املعدﻻت املرتفعة للعدوى اجللدية بالفطريات. Started as a single lesion, but now has “spread”. Over the past day the lesions have developed a dark yellowish crust. ◼ 19 year old wrestler with a 3 day h/o lesions on right side of face. Noticed “tingling” 4 days ago, small fluid filled lesions then appeared that have now started to crust over. WHAT IS HERPES GLADIATORUM OR “MAT HERPES”? HERPES GLADIATORUM IS A SKIN INFECTION CAUSED BY THE HERPES SIMPLEX VIRUS TYPE I. IT IS SOMETIMES CALLED “MAT HERPES” BECAUSE ATHLETES WHO PARTICIPATE IN HIGH- CONTACT SPORTS, LIKE WRESTLING, MAY HAVE GREATER CHANCES OF CONTRACTING THE VIRUS. HOW IS IT SPREAD? Herpes gladiatorum is spread by direct skin–to–skin contact with infected lesions or by contact with contaminated items (e.g., mats, towels, cell phones). WHO IS AT RISK FOR HERPES GLADIATORUM? Anyone can become infected, but athletes and their families are at greatest risk for infection. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? Herpes gladiatorum typically begins as a skin rash with blisters or fluid–filled lesions. The rash is commonly seen on the head, face, neck, shoulders, arms, or trunk of the body. If the eyes or surrounding areas become infected, seek medical treatment immediately. A sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, fever, and skin tingling may precede or accompany the rash. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR SYMPTOMS TO APPEAR? In most cases, symptoms will develop approximately 8 days after exposure to the virus, “Mat Herpes”but may present anywhere from 2 days to 2 weeks later. CAN A PERSON HAVE REPEATED EPISODES OF SYMPTOMS? Yes. Once a person has contracted the virus, it will remain in their body for life. They may have periodic bouts of symptoms. Recurrent episodes of rash and lesions are typically milder than the first episode. HOW LONG IS A PERSON ABLE TO SPREAD THE VIRUS? Herpes gladiatorum can be spread until the blisters or lesions are no longer present or until a doctor determines the person is no longer infectious. -
