Unit Title / ASDR / Rock n Roll / Dance on the Street / Showcase
Overview / Exploration of dance and choreography building from the four key elements of dance – Action, Space, Dynamics and Relationships. / Scheme based on Greased Lightning investigating style and genre whilst basing dance on 4 key elements in particular relationships. / Further choreography developed on skills base in a modern, street genre. / A culmination of ideas and techniques learnt combined into one piece.

YEAR 8 DANCE CURRICULUM

Unit Title / Lindyhop / Dance by Chance / Cultural Dance / Showcase
Overview / Exploration of 1920’s dance post World War 1 that shaped many forms of dance through to the 1960’s. Basic actions learnt in context being developed through basic choreographic devices. / Choreographic devices utilised through a ‘by chance’ method of choreography using numbers, di, and dance terminology to create movement sequences. / Use of the Haka (tribal based used by the New Zealand Rugby team) and Salsa to contrast styles and develop dance through use / A culmination of skills and techniques learnt combined into one piece.

YEAR 9 DANCE CURRICULUM

Unit Title / Intro to BTEC Dance; Unit 4: Dance Skills / Unit 4: Dance Skills Learning Aim B / Unit 4: Dance Skills / Unit 4: Dance Skills Learning Aim A Strand 2
Overview / This Scheme for learning aims to enable pupils to:
Become familiar with the BTEC Dance course content
Understand how the qualification is to be completed
Develop their core dance skills, technique and choreographic ability through a series of workshop style classes
(Unit 4: Dance Skills, Learning Aim A: Dance style 1)
Learn a number of street dance motifs/sequences, developing their rehearsal and dance retention skills
Take part in a Dance crew/company which will work towards a showcase of work
Understand the aspects of health and safety in Dance and the dance studio
Develop their street dance technique
Learn and rehearse technical aspects of street dance such as floor work/basic break
Develop interpretive skills
Begin to choreograph their own motifs/sequences appropriate to the style / This Scheme for learning aims to enable pupils to:
Develop their core dance skills and technique through a series of classes
Develop their audition skills with regard to performance and viva voices
Develop choreographic skills and confidence in their choreographic ability
Become familiar with and employ different chorographic devices (canon, formation, repetition, inversion, reversal etc)
Become familiar with the basic concepts of dance (travel, levels, turn, gesture, jump, roll, stillness)
Develop taught choreography in a similar style / This Scheme for learning aims to enable pupils to:
Develop their core dance skills and technique through a series of classes
Collate a repertoire of pieces and rehearse to them to performance standard
Organise a sharing of work in the manner of a professional show, inviting members of staff and producing promotional literature
Develop their independent rehearsal and time management skills
Develop choreographic skills and confidence in their choreographic ability
Develop small group, individual and whole group work / This Scheme for learning aims to enable pupils to:
Develop their core dance skills and technique through a series of workshop style classes

Learn at least one Lindy Hop number
Develop their rehearsal and dance retention skills
Take part in a Dance company which will work towards a showcase of work (‘Hairspray’)
Understand the aspects of health and safety in Dance and the dance studio
Develop their Lindy Hop technique
Learn and rehearse technical aspects of Lindy Hop such as floor lifts and partner work (possibly with the assistance of a professional practioner)
Develop interpretive skills
