Rigid Heddle Weaving

Date: February 4th, 2017

Time: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm.

Instructor: Dorothy Young

Cost: $60 members, $75 non-members

Learning to weave on a rigid heddle loom is an easy introduction to the craft. In this workshop participants will learn: to identify suitable yarns for weaving, how to determine the amount of yarn required for the project, how to prepare the loom and to then weave a scarf or a sampler. Each participant will leave the workshop with a finished piece. Basic instruction and loom preparation will occupy the morning with the entire project being completed by the end of the day. There will be time to have a group discussion to consider future project options with different yarns and possible patterns. This will be a day of fun and exploration open to anyone interested in learning to weave.

For spinners rigid heddle weaving is very attractive as it is an extremely efficient use of valuable yarn with little or no waste.

All equipment and yarns will be provided and there will be no supply cost.

Weaving two layers of fabric simultaneously and switching their orientation seems difficult but it is surprisingly simple to do. Fairly novice weavers can easily learn this versatile technique.

While weaving a sampler students will explore all possibilities of Double Weave:

casings, double width fabric, tubes, slits, vertical and horizontal dividers, tucking, plus pick-up techniques such as quilting, Ulla Cyrus, Mexican, and Finnweave.

This is also an excellent opportunity for those who want to work on the OHS Weaving Certificate. Special attention will be given to those participants in regards to the requirements of the course. These students must acquire the booklet for Unit 11 from Bev Lickers .

Weaving with Linen

Date: Saturday and Sunday May 27-28th, 2017

Times: 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Instructor: Susi Reinink

Cost: $140 members, $170 non-members

Material fees approximately $15.00

Weaving with linen - due to its particular qualities - requires special attention in dressing the loom and weaving a project. The focus of this workshop is getting familiar with the particularities of this lustrous, strong fibre. The end result will be a runner woven with a given threading and sett in Bronson Lace.

Participants will be introduced to the production, weight, twist, characteristics and care of linen. Subsequently they proceed winding the warp in class with 2/16 linen provided by the instructor for a very reasonable fee.

Relative novice weavers are encouraged to participate in this workshop as many tips and short cuts on how to dress a loom efficiently (and unassisted) in general will be offered.
