Volunteer Family Planning Coordinator, New Ireland Position Description

Position title: Family Planning Coordinator Location: Kavieng, New Ireland Province, Papua New Guinea Reports to: PNG Program Manager

Overall job role The Family Planning (FP) Coordinator role is a combination of project design and implementation of ADI’s family planning project in New Ireland Province as well as relationship building with partners and stakeholders. The role involves working alongside New Ireland Provincial FP officers to both build their capacity and to learn from them how to implement a province wide FP program involving training of clinical staff on modern FP methods/counselling, conducting FP outreach services and engaging with rural communities to build awareness of FP and reproductive rights and develop integrated community approaches to FP and reproductive rights.

The Family Planning Coordinator will work to design and implement a similar province wide FP program in other provinces outside of New Ireland and may require travelling to other provinces. The role works closely with the ADI Programs Manager and Health Project Coordinator.

Position Details Project design  Oversee the implementation, reporting and evaluation of the and Family Planning project. implementation  Work alongside Provincial FP officers to plan FP training for rural health workers and community outreach delivering education and FP services to support NIPH and to replicate in Western Province and other provinces. This includes annual plan for family planning services, ensuring adequate supply chain and supervision and monitoring and evaluation through ADI NIPH patrols.

 Learning and documenting a province wide FP approach in New

1 Ireland to replicate in WP and other provinces (will involve travel to other provinces)

 Ensure timely preparation and implementation of planned activities.  Provide recommendations to ADI Program Manager and ADI Management on improvements to the project.

Training local  Management and coordination of Family Planning In-service health staff trainings with Marie Stopes PNG for health workers in New Ireland.  Capacity building and mentoring of Provincial family planning officers and rural FP staff  Prepare and conduct training for local health workers in reproductive health, family planning, adolescent and women’s health, HIV/AIDS, gender-based violence and sexual harassment and other related topics.  Prepare and conduct training/engagement with rural communities to develop integrated community approaches to family planning and reproductive rights. Relationship  Represent ADI in networking and collaboration with the health building & stakeholders in New Ireland to ensure the family planning project stakeholder contributes to strengthening the health system to deliver to PNG management Standards and National Objectives.  Provide administration support to Family Planning stakeholder groups in Kavieng and Namatanai, including local government and communities, other organisations and religious groups.  Consult with all Family Planning stakeholders in the New Ireland Province to encourage improved coordination between delivery, access and supply of FP services – including outreach patrols to rural and remote areas.

Required  Demonstrated experience training clinical staff; Experience  High level time management and professional organisation skills; Demonstrated ability to analyse health systems and advocate for improvements; Ability to mentor health workers in remote areas and develop and deliver identified training programs; Experience working in the health sector in developing countries and/ or rural and remote Australian communities;  High level skills in partner and community engagement.

Volunteer Family Planning Coordinator NI – Position Description, September 2017 2 Required  Tertiary degree of equivalent in public health, nursing or similar Qualifications discipline. Formal training in Family Planning/Reproductive health is strongly preferred. Required  Initiative; Interpersonal Skills  Commitment to team work, coaching and mentoring others;  Excellent listening and communications skills, both spoken and written;  Ability to work independently;  Awareness of and sensitivity to cross-cultural settings;  Patience, tolerance and flexibility;  Ability to cope with cultural isolation, and physically fit for travelling to remote health facilities with poor infrastructure;  Able to work with limited resources in a challenging environment.

Required Skills  Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook Express;  Ability to manage basic laptop/desktop IT communication (USB modem, email, digital photos etc.)
