Any good Service project provides opportunities to collect original data that can be presented in the form of tables, pie diagrams, and bar graphs. Better still are line graphs that reveal change over time and can be extrapolated to predict possible future trends. To prepare to make such visuals for the team’s Research Report and Formal presentation each freshman will produce a data table, a pie diagram, and a bar graph using data collected in the early stages of their Service project. These visuals will be produced by computer and submitted along with a proposal for a line graph that their team will complete by the end of the Service project.

As the service project proceeds, freshmen will gather information about their topics using a variety of sources including periodicals, the Internet, books, encyclopedias, and even educational programming. Better still are interviews with professionals or volunteers who have first-hand experience. Each freshman will demonstrate their progress in the form of an Annotated bibliography. Begin with a bibliography citation done in the MLA style (Consult your English teacher for the MLA style for sources not cited before). Next, provide a researched fact relevant to the topic and a parenthetical note, which immediately informs the reader where the information came from (See Appendix 2, page 20 for a summary of how to use parenthetical notes for a variety of sources). Lastly, add an explanation of why the fact is relevant to your topic. Information presented in the annotated bibliography must come from at least three different sources.

Annotated bibliographies, which summarize up to twelve facts per group, provide a useful starting point on which to build a team’s knowledge. However, students must continue to gather more information throughout the entire project if they are to become a group of experts on their topic (See Appendix 3, page 21 for Annotated bibliography rubric).

Freshmen who haven’t finalized the Visuals and/or the Annotated bibliography by Friday, February 2nd will have to complete the Change Project Research report on their own. If this is not done by Friday, March 23rd then they will have to complete the Formal presentation on their own as well.
