Instructional Goals NROC’s Developmental English program is designed to help students meet basic college entrance requirements. Combining highly sophisticated software with fundamental pedagogy, this online program integrates and reinforces the standard developmental English curriculum—reading comprehension, writing, vocabulary building, and grammar skills—to fully prepare students for credit-bearing courses.

By the end of this course, you will:  Compose a variety of texts that demonstrate clear focus, logical development of ideas, and the use of appropriate language that advances the writer’s purpose.  Determine and use effective approaches and rhetorical strategies for given writing assignments  Generate ideas and gather information relevant to the topic and purpose, incorporating the ideas and words of other writers in student writing using established strategies.  Evaluate relevance and quality of ideas and information to formulate and develop a claim.  Develop and use effective revision strategies to strengthen the writer’s ability to compose college-level writing assignments.  Edit writing to conform to the conventions of standard English.

Required Materials To successfully complete this course, you will need English 0301 Required Materials:

 A spiral for vocabulary

 A one-inch binder for notes and organization

 Several pens

 Notebook paper

 Tissues (Yes, high school kids need them too, and the school does not provide them.)

Students are expected to come to class with a writing utensil and paper every day!

Course Schedule  Though this course is self-paced, there are deadlines for each unit.  Each unit begins with a pretest and ends with a posttest.  There will be four essays required for completion of the course.  At the conclusion of the course, the final will be the TSI test.  Your binder will also be included as part of your grade.

Classroom Procedures:  Upon entering, check for handouts to pick up and Do Nows to being  Sit at your assigned computer and log into the course.  Steadily work through the course each day *No one may leave the first 15 minutes of class or the last 15 minutes of class per school policy. *No one may leave class during direct teaching or whole group instruction.

Department Grading Categories:

Quizzes and Tests  Each quiz has ten questions and is worth 20 points o Upon successful completion of the post-quiz, the pre-quiz grade will be exempted.  If you get 80% or higher on a pre-quiz, you will complete the study guide for the questions missed and get a notebook grade. You will skip the rest of the unit.  Units 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9 and 10 = 160 possible points

Study Guides  Resources for questions missed on the pre-quiz only  5 points possible (factored into quiz grades)  8 units (1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9 and 10) = 40 points possible

Writing Assignments  Varying points (increases with difficulty/length of the assignment)  4 writing assignments—Units 1, 4, 7, and 10 = 200 points)

Notebooks  Up to 2 points possible per unit

Final Exam  Can only be taken when all units are completed

Tutoring/Additional Assistance

I will be available for tutoring/additional assistance and make up work on most days after school except Wednesdays, which is reserved for staff meetings. I can do mornings by appointment, but bear in mind that I have morning duty and will not always be available. Please let me know if you are interested in extra help. I am here to help you.
