Issue Statement/Business Need:

The objective of the Study items would be to unleash the potential of M2M in Automobile, transportation and logistics industry. The group will be working to study the use cases relevant for Indian Geography, derive effective technology to address the challenges currently faced by the transportation industry and improve efficiency. The main objective of the group will be to address the below

·  Enhancing convenience to use public transport, connecting para transit and mass transit modes.

·  Optimize emergency Services

·  Provide Road Safety to commuters and driver.

·  Monitor and regulate driving behavior.

·  Manage traffic optimize route.

·  Personal Car Monitoring and management.

·  Utilizing Smart Phone ecosystem.

·  Enable vehicle manufactures to provide VAS to consumers

·  Vehicle to Vehicle, vehicle to Infrastructure communications.

·  Monitor and reduce traffic violation.

·  Enable parking assistance and road tolling.

Suggested Solution:

Capture use cases pertaining to Indian geography. Highlighting the technology used along with challenges and requirements.

To cover all aspects in which M2M technology can be used for automobile sector of Indian geography. This should be widespread and we should ensure no service is missed. The use case can be futuristic also. It should cover the needs of a retail consumer, enterprise as well as the government bodies.

High-level use cases:

(As first step we are capturing only description of the use case in next step we will finalize the format to describe the same. )

  1. Fleet Management:

This use case will enable transportation fleet enterprises to manage their operations more efficiently. The High Value Asset (fleet) will be connected with a GPS + GSM/CDMA module, and will transmit location information on a predefined time or on request. The Application will utilize the data transmitted by the device to derive maintenance schedule, route optimization, distance travelled, speed, driving behavior, fleet efficiency.

•  Typical call flow:

•  Fleet management Applications server configures route information, reporting scheduled for location, velocity etc to the device.

•  On predefined interval device, use GPS to derive the location information, uses GSM module to establish PDP with operator network.

•  Device Send the location information to the Application Server.

•  Fleet management application server uses the information, converts into meaningful output and presents it to the Fleet Owner.

  1. Radio Taxi Management:

This use case will enable radio taxi operators to automate their operational process. All the CABs operating in the field will be embedded or fitted with a M2M gateway device, which would continuously transmitting the location, status, alerts, driver behavior. Call Center Agent can track any CAB through the GUI and allocate the CAB to the nearest customer. Value Added Services like maintenance management, Driver behavior, Security feature for passengers (Panic Button), In vehicle surveillance etc.

  1. Consignment/Asset Tracking:

This service will enable Logistic companies to track their valuable assets movement, manage schedule and customer expectation. The asset will be connected to thin client GPS device with GSM/CDMA module, which will transmit current locations periodically or on request. Due to small packet size both SMS and Packet core would be used as bearer channel.

  1. Employee Commutation Safety:

This service will enable companies operating in BPO/ITES/IT sector to automate their CAB Management service for employees and ensure their safety. All the CAB operating for a specific company will be tracked along with the employees on board. Companies will be able to manage and monitor their employee commutation policies.

  1. Students Commutation Safety:

This use case will ensure safety of children traveling by school’s owned transport services. The users of this solution would be school administrators, parents of the students who would track and trace the school bus on real time, receive alerts and notifications. The device installed in the vehicle should be equipped with GPS for Locations tacking, RFID for identifying the students and staff on boarded.

Vehicle to Vehicle, vehicle to Infrastructure communications

  1. Mobile ICN

Heavy usage of multimedia applications, gaming, social media in mobile phones/smart-phones, and mobile tablets these days are forcing us to think about whether we can design an Information Centric Networking (ICN) like model for mobile (e.g., LTE or LTE-advanced) networks. We envisage mobile ICN as an interesting use case for the automotive vertical. The conglomeration of mobile ICN as well as automotive has similar challenges like naming of content and devices, addressing, routing, security etc. Vehicle to vehicle communication can be an enabler for mobile ICN implementation.

  1. Delay Tolerant Network

To ensure connectivity at remote areas as well as high traffic congested areas to vehicles for usual V2V (Vehicle to Vehicle) and/or V2I (Vehicle to Infrastructure) communication, Delay Tolerant Networks (DTN) can be used. DTN provides an asynchronous mode of communication in which instead of continuous communication, intermittent high speed communications are possible.

DTN can not only improve the network throughput, but also can use the available connectivity efficiently such that V2V or V2I communication can become possible. This can also be used to provide communication for underwater networks such as communication between environmental sensors, sensors placed on sea animals, divers, etc.
