TITLE:On Call Mechanic DEPT: Public Works/Road Division

DATE: October 2017 REPORTS TO: Fleet Supervisor

BASIC FUNCTIONS:

Service and repair of County vehicles and road construction equipment. Application of mechanical skills and exercising independent judgement in properly diagnosing equipment malfunctions. Determines proper action to correct malfunctions and repairs equipment accordingly. Works cooperatively and effectivelywith the public and other employees. This is a non-exempt, non–union position.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. High School Diploma or equivalent.

2.At least 3 years experience repairing and servicing heavy equipment or light trucks and passenger vehicles.

3.Experience using computers, analyzers and scanners for diagnostics.

4.Ability to gas and electric-arc weld preferred.

5.Certifications from nationally recognized trade organizations and/or degrees from accredited trade schools are desired.

6.Ability to operate single axle and tandem axle trucks and trailers, dozers, graders, loaders and road sweeperspreferred.

7.Good physical condition as this position requires some heavy manual labor.

8.Valid driver’s license.

9. Ability to work flexible schedules.

10.Must successfully pass a pre-employment physical, a background check and a driving record check.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1.Service and repair diesel trucks, heavy equipment, light trucks and passenger vehicles both in the shop and in the field.

2.Diagnosis equipment failures using computers, analyzers and scanners.

3.Operate a single axle and tandem axle truck and trailer, a dozer, loader and other road construction and maintenance equipment.

4.Gas and electric-arc welding.

5.Work in a safe manner and contribute to a safe work environment.

6.Assisting other employees as needed.

7.Other duties as assigned by the Fleet Supervisor.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Routinely stands, bends, sits, kneels and/or squats in awkward positions on hard surfaces for extended time periods: walks, climbs and/or crawls up or down inclines, stairs, ladders, etc. sometimes while carrying, pulling, pushing and/or lifting objects in excess of 50 pounds.

Exposure to noise, fumes, chemicals and/or extreme weather conditions can be expected.
Regular and punctual attendance is required. Because of the nature of this position, duties must be performed during regular hours within the department.

This position is on-call. Work hours and work days may vary with a maximum of 866 hours per year. Occasionally work extended hours, varied starting time, on weekends and holidays and on overtime, sometimes with little or no notice.
