It came to pass after a time that the people of Ammon made war against Israel. And so it was, when the people of Ammon made war against Israel, that the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob. Then they said to Jephthah, “Come and be our commander that we may fight against the people of Ammon.” So Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “Did you not hate me, and expel me from my father’s house? Why have you come to me now when you are in distress?” And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “That is why we have turned again to you now, that you may go with us and fight against the people of Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.” So Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “If you take me back home to fight against the people of Ammon, and the Lord delivers them to me, shall I be your head?” And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “The Lord will be a witness between us, if we do not do according to your words.” Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and commander over them; and Jephthah spoke all his words before the Lord in Mizpah. Judges 11:4-11 NKJV
And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord, and said, “If You will indeed deliver the people of Ammon into my hands, then it will be that whatever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the people of Ammon, shall surely be the Lord’s, and I will offer it up as a burnt offering.” So Jephthah advanced toward the people of Ammon to fight against them, and the Lord delivered them into his hands. And he defeated them from Aroer as far as Minnith—twenty cities—and to Abel Keramim, with a very great slaughter. Thus the people of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel. When Jephthah came to his house at Mizpah, there was his daughter, coming out to meet him with timbrels and dancing; and she was his only child. Besides her he had neither son nor daughter. And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he tore his clothes, and said, “Alas, my daughter! You have brought me very low! You are among those who trouble me! For I have given my word to the Lord, and I cannot go back on it.” Judges 11:30-35 NKJV
And it was so at the end of two months that she returned to her father, and he carried out his vow with her which he had vowed. She knew no man. And it became a custom in Israel. Judges 11:39 NKJV
And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28 NKJV
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11 NKJV
“Humble Faith #4”
“Every scripture in the Old Testament speaks of spiritual matters in the New Testament. These spiritual matters are the physical examples of what we the
Church should learn spiritually. We fail to see the importance of what God wants to do in our lives. Humble faith means that we are incredibly dependent
on God for everything. God wants to bless us abundantly and His word tells us how we are to live today. Out of weakness we are made strong. God is going to take us from a place of weakness to a place of strength to do great and mighty deeds. The story of Jephthah tells us that he did not achieve
as great accomplishments as some others; however, he caught the attention of God. He was able to achieve the desire and will of God. If we could live our
lives like Jephthah, our destiny would change.
1. Jephthah did not allow rejection to be the end of his life. He did not allow rejection from hindering him from becoming great!
a. He did not let the declarations of the past declare the destiny of his future
b. He did not give up on God because people gave up on him. We live in a world of rejection. If we cannot get past the rejection of the world we will
never have a future in God.
2. Vindication and promotions come from God
Jephthah’s story and Joseph’s story are similar in that they were both rejected by their families. Both men became great leaders because it is God who vindicates and promotes
3. God will take you further than you expect. You can get past the pain of rejection with Jesus!
4. Keep your commitments to God. By not keeping your commitments with God, Grace will cover you, but it won’t get you respect and favor from God
