DEADLINE: 4.00pm, Friday 16th September 2016 /

This initiative seeks to support the development of examples that highlight the impact of HPRU EZI research currently being undertaken.

RESEARCH IMPACT SUPPORT AIMS: Significant sums of public money are being allocated to NIHR HPRUs and it is therefore essential for us to demonstrate the value of this investment in terms of achieving the stated aims of the funding scheme, i.e.:

  • creating an environment where world class health protection research, focused on the needs of the public, can thrive;
  • translating advances in health protection research into benefits for patients and the public;
  • focusing on priority areas which will have the greatest impact on public health;
  • providing high quality research evidence to inform decision-making by public health professionals;
  • increasing the volume and quality of multi-disciplinary health protection research in England;
  • providing a flexible staff capacity in the event of a major health protection incident;
  • retaining a level of responsive research capacity to address emerging health protection research requirements.

In addition, it is important to demonstrate the contribution that HPRUs make to economic growth, and to the NIHR health research system as a whole (Economic, environmental, or Social impact, Impact on health and wellbeing, or Policy influence and change)

Examples of impact include:

Supporting commercial collaborative and contract commercial studies in public health research;

Supporting the translation of new treatments, diagnosis or devices to produce the clinical evidence for the uptake of new commercially-supplied innovations into the NHS or public health services;

Providing the clinical evidence to help Public Health England and/or the NHS to make efficient use of resources, such as generating the evidence to stop ineffective or unnecessarily costly treatments or services;

Providing the research evidence that contributes to a healthier workforce and wider population

Training a highly skilled workforce that benefits industry

Creating the research environment which adds to the nation's international competitiveness as a place to do public health research

Attracting, developing and retaining the best clinical, health service and public health research professionals who contribute to growth through their research
