The Department of Campus Recreation

Annual Report 2009-2010

Unit Profile Statement

The Department of Campus Recreation provides students, faculty and staff with a broad range of recreation and wellness opportunities through comprehensive programs and quality facilities. The department is comprised of six component areas: Informal Recreation, Intramural Sports, Fitness and Wellness, Sport Clubs, Aquatics and Spirit Groups. The department also manages the Maverick Activities Center (MAC), Campus Recreation Fields Complex, and P.E. Building.

Major Goals, Opportunities and Initiatives

The Department of Campus Recreation provides opportunities and experiences that contribute to the health, wellness, development and education of the University community through involvement in recreational, leisure, and social activities. Major goals and initiatives for the Department of Campus Recreation for the 2009-2010 academic year included: increasing participation in programs and services, initiating an adaptive recreation program, hosting community events, providing support for the athletic teams, assessing the Campus Recreation experience, and creating an environment supportive of academic success.

Program/Service Areas and Subcomponents

In just over two year’s the Maverick Activities Center saw over one million users. The millionth customer, Marco Villanueva, entered the MAC in September. The student was welcomed with a celebration and a $500 gift certificate to the bookstore. The MAC’s second birthday was also celebrated in September. The MAC continues to see a large number of students on a daily basis (Monday-Friday). Close to 65% of UT Arlington students use the facility. There was an average of 526,582 total participations (21% increase from 2008-2009) and about 18,000 individual users (12% increase from 2008-2009) during the fall and spring semesters. This year the department continued to offer services during holiday closings and minimally closed the facilities. The computer lab continued to have an impressive amount of users, with an average of 48,000 total logins and approximately 6,500 unique users.

The Fitness and Wellness areas offered a variety of programs and services to meet the needs of the UT Arlington community. On average, 40 group exercise classes were offered per week. Group exercise pass sales remained strong with a high of 348 sold in the fall. There was significant growth in the wellness programs. There were about 860 personal training clients (25% increase from 2008-2009), 652 massage appointments (177% increase from 2008-2009) and 55 dietician sessions (85% increase from 2008-2009). Campus Recreation held the second annual Cyclethon in celebration of World Heart Day and raised $1,493 that was donated to the American Heart Association. Fourteen teams entered and continued to cycle for 12 hours. The Great American Smokeout was held with Health Services and had 185 participants. Campus Recreation continued to engage the faculty and staff with office decorating contests and Faculty/Staff Happy Hour (group exercise class for f/s only). The department collaborated with the University Center, Apartment and Residence Life, Health Services, the Police Department and two outside organizations – Tarrant County Challenge and Recovery Resource Council for Halloween Casino Night that had 500+ participants. In conjunction with the Olympics, Campus Recreation offered a fitness challenge to all MAC members to encourage them to work out on a regular basis. A total of 183 participants signed up and 96 of them achieved a medal status.

Intramural Sports added new events to their program schedule including: IM Open House with over 300 in attendance both semesters, Ultimate Frisbee with 12 teams and 3-on-3 Wheelchair Basketball with 11 teams. There were 564 teams in 2009-2010, which is an increase from 14.4% from the previous year (only counting sports played in both academic years, summer not included). The program remains active with the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) sending officials and players to the NIRSA Flag Football Tournament at Stephen F. Austin University and to the NIRSA Basketball Tournament at UT San Antonio. An Intramural Sports supervisor, Ty Smathers, received the Student Employee of the Year, Award of Excellence and accepted a position at Ohio State University as a graduate assistant for Campus Recreation.

There were 589 individuals on campus that participated in sport clubs during the 2009-2010 school year. There were over 5,000 combined participations (including practices and home events) for sport clubs during the 2009-2010 school year.

The department was able to start an adaptive recreation program. Currently, UT Arlington is one of only seven universities in the country that compete in the NWBA Intercollegiate Division. Of those seven programs, four provide Intercollegiate athletics for women. Of the seven programs that provide intercollegiate sport opportunities, UT Arlington is the only institution that offers a variety of adaptive intramural programs for students beyond a wheelchair basketball intramural tournament or league. The adaptive recreation program teamed up with Intramural Sports to host a 4-on-4 Wheelchair Football Tournament (5 teams), Wheelchair Badminton (18 participants), Up/down Wheelchair Tennis (40 participants), and Wheelchair Table Tennis (26 participants).

Spirit Groups had a total of 33 members this year. They practiced heavily throughout the year (187 times) and supported UT Arlington Athletics at over 50 events. The cheerleaders participated in the 2010 National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) Collegiate National Championship and came in first place.

Aquatic participations showed an increase this year. Participations increased by 11.5% from 2008-2009 to 2009-2010.

Campus Recreation continues to collaborate for numerous projects, committees and events such as: MavsMeet Convocation, The Mavsmeet After Party, Maverick Cookout, Hazing Prevention Week, Bed Races, Halloween Casino Night, Homecoming, Oozeball, Parent and Family Weekend, Student Affairs Communications Committee, Student Affairs Professional Development Committee, Student Affairs External Funding Committee, and the Student Affairs Assessment Team.

Challenges

Ongoing construction and repairs with the MAC and with the Fields Complex are always underway as the Department of Campus Recreation strives to be fully functional and up to par with competing universities. Maintenance has always been an issue as equipment is overused and stressed from the usual wear and tear.

Risk management is a daily challenge for Campus Recreation in the operation of its numerous programs and facilities. Based upon the hours of operation for the MAC and Campus Recreation Fields Complex, the number of Sport Clubs, Intramural Sports offering and group exercise classes, Campus Recreation professionals must be diligent in keeping up with risk management trends and ensuring the safety of programs and facilities.

Feature Story

After a narrow second place finish to Stephen F. Austin in 2009, the UT Arlington Cheerleading squad brought home it's first National Championship this past spring. The squad competed against eleven other teams at the 2010 NCA Collegiate Cheerleading National Championship in the Small Coed Division I, beating Southland Conference rivals Stephen F. Austin and UT San Antonio. These student athletes have worked extremely hard all year long to get to the level they are at. They juggle school, practices, athletic events, university/community appearances and jobs. Competing is the team's reward at the end of a demanding year. When UT Arlington was announced as National Champions, the squad erupted in emotion and excitement. All of the hard work, and many long practices paid off. This experience for the team has taught them to really go after what they want, even when things get challenging. The future looks bright for UT Arlington Spirit Groups. With talented new members joining the team and a solid group of returning veterans, the squad already has their minds set on a back to back win.
