The James R. Nattinger Scholarship Fund

News Update – 2007

THE TENTH
NATTINGER FELLOWSHIP
AWARDED FOR FALL 2007
This year we were only able to award a partial stipend of a lump sum to an outstanding student in our MA:TESOL program. (See Column #2 for a profile of the winner.) Our grand total in the endowment account is now $215,464, which is not sufficient to earn enough excess funds in order to guarantee a full stipend (tuition waiver and small stipend) each year. Eventually, we would like to build the endowment account to a balance large enough to fund a two-year award on an annual basis in order to reinforce the prestigious nature of the Nattinger Fellowship.

PROFILE: THE 2007-2008
NATTINGER RECIPIENT
This year’s recipient is Jasmin Kratzer. Jasmin graduated from Willamette University in 2002 with degrees in French and International Studies. As an undergraduate, Jasmin worked with Japanese exchange students as a mentor and tutor. Before beginning the MA:TESOL program Jasmin was a volunteer ESL instructor for IRCO and worked full-time at the French American International School, an immersion PS-8th grade school, as the after-school coordinator. In the fall of 2002, Jasmin enrolled as a post-bacc in the Introduction to Linguistics course here at PSU. That class inspired her to apply to the MA:TESOL program and helped her to discover her passion for linguistics. As an MA:TESOL student Jasmin has volunteered with IELP as a conversation partner and tutor and as a tutor for ESL students at Atkinson elementary school in SE Portland. This summer Jasmin has been teaching for Capstone English Mastery Program, an English language institute downtown, and also took a linguistics course, Bilingualism. As she begins her second year as a graduate student, Jasmin plans to focus on linguistic research through work at the PSU ESOL lab school where she will be analyzing conversational interactions among adult learners of English.

PROFILE: THE 2007-2008
NATTINGER RECIPIENT
Jasmin will be involved with a couple projects currently underway at the department’s ESL Lab School, working closely with Dr. John Hellerman. She will be learning the Class Action analysis software package to enable her to do doing video-based analysis of classroom language acquisition of adult immigrant learners of English. The first project is working to understand how immigrant-learner identity impacts language acquisition. The second project is investigating how adult immigrants with little experience in formal educational settings adapt to the practices for language learning that are part of classroom ESL instruction. We are very pleased to have Jasmin as part of our team.

THE NATTINGER WEBPAGE
IN THE MAKING
This webpage will give our readers a sense of who Jim Nattinger was and why the award was established in his name. We plan on including pictures of Jim and stories that his friends remember him by to make it more personal.
We also want to get our past award recipients involved by contributing information about their personal experience in our department and their current whereabouts.
Our goal is to have this webpage up and running by the beginning of next year. Any suggestions will be welcome. You can e-mail Karin Tittelbach at .
