PERSONAL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT (PPE)
/ Safety glasses or face shield must be worn at all times in work areas and specifically when operating wood jointers. / / Long and loose hair must be tied back.
/ Appropriate footwear must be worn when preforming work with wood jointers. Shoe must be fully enclosed. No open toed shoes allowed. / / Close fitting/protective clothing must be worn. Remove strings hanging from pullovers/sweaters.
/ Rings and jewelry (long necklaces / bracelets, etc.) must not be worn. Lighters, matches and cell phones are not allowed in the shop area when the shop is operational. Wearing gloves is not allowed when using wood jointers. / / Hearing protection must be worn as per shop location protocols and when using this machine constantly for an extended period of time. Hearing protection is always recommended when using powered wood jointer equipment..
Other PPE Considerations / Dust masks may be required depending on material being worked on and potential worker senilities.
HAZARDS PRESENT / SUPPORTING
REQUIREMENTS
·  Discharge of objects or materials from cutting process
·  Jointer cutter head binding causing kickback or violent movement of the material
·  Serious cut and amputation potential to hands or other body parts from jointer cutting head, entanglement injuries
·  Eye injury potential from discharged objects or materials from cutting process
·  Respiratory risks when material being cut become airborne (sensitivities)
·  Noise exposure from prolonged period of equipment use or workspace environment.
·  Metal friction heating at point of operation (jointer blade and material potentially)
·  Other, not yet identified based on experience. / ·  General shops and department safety orientations
·  Read and understand general safety rules and regulations
·  Applicable other cutting process safe work procedures
·  Safety related contents of wood jointer Operator Manual
·  Other instruction and supervision
·  Other, not yet identified based on experience
SAFE WORK PROCEDURE
DO NOT use this machine or perform this process unless a supervisor / teacher instructed you in safe procedures / operation and have given you authorization to perform associated tasks.
Always use tools and equipment for their intended purposes only.
Always take out of service and report damaged equipment to your supervisor / teacher without delay.
Pre-Job Safety:
1)  Check workspaces and walkways to ensure no slip/trip hazards are present.
2)  Locate and ensure you are familiar with the operation of the ON/OFF starter and E-Stop (if fitted).
3)  Use only materials free from defects.
4)  Always make sure exposed cutter head behind the fence is guarded. Never perform jointing or planning operations with the guard removed.
5)  Keep the cutter head sharp and free of all rust and pitch.
6)  Never start the jointer with the work piece contacting the cutter head.
7)  Never leave the machine running unattended. Do not leave the machine until the blade has come to a complete stop.
8)  Before making adjustments switch off and bring the machine to a complete standstill.
9)  Your hands should never cross the blade.
10)  Keep hands 10cm (4in.) away from the cutting head. Use a push stick when closer than 10cm.
11)  Let the blade reach full speed before you start to cut. Hold material firmly against the table and fence and feed in to the blade slowly.
12)  Do not back the work piece toward the in-feed table.
13)  Never leave the machine running while unattended.
14)  If the material is lower than the fence use two push-sticks; one on the side of the board and one on the top.
15)  Do not perform jointing operation on material shorter than 30cm (12”), narrower than 18.8mm (¾ “) or less than 12.5mm ( ½ “)
16)  The maximum cut for the edge of the board is 3mm (1/8”).
17)  Do not store tools and parts on top of the machine.
18)  Faulty equipment must not be used. Immediately report suspect machinery to your teacher.
Set Up:
19)  Don all personal protective equipment: safety glasses / face shield, hearing protection, proper footwear (closed toe / heal shoes). Remove all jewelry; loose clothing and tie back hair.
20)  Ensure the 0n/Off switch is in the “off” position and plug the machine into properly grounded power source.
21)  Set the depth of the cut: - Loosen the lock knob and turn the adjusting know clockwise to lower and counter clockwise to raise the in-feed table. After the in-feed table is at the desired setting tighten the lock knob to the thickness of the stock. Use the scale on the side of the machine to determine the depth of the cut.
22)  Set the speed control to the desired speed.
23)  Adjust the fence: To adjust the fence loosen the lock lever on the back of the fence and slide the fence to the desired position on the table. Tighten the lever. To tilt the fence, loosen the lever and tilt the fence to the desired angle. Tighten the lever.
24)  Place material to be cut onto the table, well away from the cutter head. Never start the machine with the stock in contact with the cutter head.
25)  Inspect the lumber for foreign materials, e.g. nails, screws, etc.
Operate / Perform Process:
26)  To cut material: Turn on power and let machine come to full speed and use both hands to hold the material firmly against the in-feed table and fence. The left hand holds the work against the table and fence and the right hand pushes the work toward the knives.
27)  Maintain a 10cm (4 inch) distance from the cutter head with fingers and use a push stick when necessary. Never pass hands directly over the cutter head.
28)  As work progresses across the cutter head the left hand should be moved to the material on the out-feed table.
29)  If the wood to be planed is dished or warped, take light cuts until the surface is flat. Avoid forcing the material against the table.
30)  Always use push block when planning short or thin pieces. Always feed work into the jointer with the grain. Feeding against the grain will result in chipped and splintered edges.
31)  When work has been completed, turn off the jointer and stay till machine comes to a complete stop.
Post Job Procedure:
32)  Remove material and clean up any debris with a broom and dust pan. Dust mask is recommended if there is lots of dust created.
33)  If jointer or cutter head is damaged, give to the instructor to lock out.
34)  Report any hazardous situations to your supervisor / instructor immediately.
Lockout:
1)  Apply lockout device to plug end or electrical energy isolation point (breaker, e-stop, other)
2)  Apply locks and tags as per established lockout procedure
