Scripture Readings for October 16, 2016

Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Exodus 17:8-13: When Moses raised his arms to God in prayer, the battle went well. So Aaron and Hur supported his arms, lest the attackers defeat Israel. When they got tired, they used a rock to keep his arms up. By sunset, Israel won the fight.

Psalm 121:1- 2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8: "Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth."

2 Timothy 3:14 - 4:2: Paul urged Timothy to remain faithful to sacred Scripture because God inspired it. God’s inspired word, the source of wisdom in Christ, helps people learn goodness and holiness.

Luke 18:1-8: Jesus taught a lesson about the power of persistent prayer by telling the story of a persistent widow who wore down a corrupt judge by continually demanding her rights. The judge issued a settlement in her favor, lest she do him in.

~ FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK ~

Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Only one of the lepers out of the ten that were cured by Jesus found it important to stop, come before the Lord, and offer Him thanks and glory. This day and age the same scenario repeats itself. God has blessed His people with many gifts and what sort of response is He given in return? He may receive a quick thank you if one is able to find the time among all the other obligations that are deemed more important. It seems that ingratitude to God and ignoring His Presence among us is becoming more and more common. And then the question is asked, “Why is the world in such a mess?” “Why does God allow all these disasters to happen?” The answer coincides with our response of gratitude and praise to God. Are we the one who returns to offer thanks or are we among the nine finding other things to busy ourselves with rather than rending thanks and praise to God?

As we continue our annual CSA appeal, be mindful that your gift to the Catholic Stewardship Appeal, regardless of its size, makes a difference, and is appreciated. By your participation and generosity you share in the ministerial works of the Diocese. May God bless each of you for your participation in this year’s CSA.

Respect Life month continues. If you or someone you know is suffering after abortion, confidential non-judgmental help is available: Call Project Rachel’s national toll-free number (888) 456-HOPE (-4673) or visit HopeAfterAbortion.org. Spanish speakers may visit EsperanzaPosaborto.org.
