APRIL MEETING April 8, 2008 7:00 P.M. Fairborn Senior Center 325 N. Third Street Fairborn, Ohio 9378784141 Visitors Welcome - $5.00 Speaker Fee

Speaker Relates How Quilts and History Have Intertwined Joining us for the April meeting will be Sandra Brothers from Indiana who will share her knowledge of quilts in reference to the Underground Railroad. Her lecture is entitled “Underground Railroad and Other Story Quilts”. She will have quilts and pieces of history to share with us. It’s always interesting to hear how people past, present and future will use their quilts. As we have done in the past if you are not a guild member, the cost is $5.00 to enjoy the lecture. When the Miami Valley Quilters’ Guild compensates their speakers, we do ask that non-embers pay an entrance fee. We encourage you to become a member, get involved and share in the great times we have together. In appreciation for participation. Shari Brindley Vice President [email protected] A Note from the President Profits from our quilt show (May16 and 17) and membership dues are the primary sources of income for our Guild. Keeping in mind that we only have a quilt show every other year and that we aim to get $4,000 each year from the quilt show account to support the Guild, I want to present a report on the quilt show account. In May 2007 the quilt show fund had $8,702.33. We transferred $4,000 to the Guild for operating expenses and $405 for half the cost of the rental of the storage unit where we keep the quilt racks and other supplies of the Guild. We also spent $384.05 on raffle tickets for the raffle quilt and $209.47 for fabric for the raffle quilt. There was also a tax bill for $67.50. We did add $446 in raffle ticket sales. That left the fund at $4,082.31 as of October 2007. Since then we have added $2,000 from vendors applying for space at the quilt show, $274 from raffle ticket sales, and $50 from rental of quilt racks. We also had expenses of $20 for NQA membership for the Guild and $79.36 for raffle quilt supplies. This brings us to $6,306.95. When you project the expenses yet to come from this amount of money, you realize that each of us can do a lot to help make this a successful quilt show. In May we have to pay $3,300 to use the building at the fairgrounds. We will have to pay $500 to reserve time and space for the next show in 2010. We have to get liability insurance and quilt show insurance and there will be some other show expenses. The Guild is expecting $4,000 for 2008 expenses and $405 for the 2008 bill for the storage unit. Not to mention expecting to get that amount of money in 2009 and 2010. How can each of us help? Raffle ticket sales! By going to our website (www.miamiamivalleyquiltersguild.org in case you do not know) and running off flyers to spotlight the show. By encouraging friends, family and anybody else we can think of to attend the show. The entrance fee is a significant source of income. We can contribute quilts to the auction. Those sales are profit for the show. We also get a small percentage of sales from the boutique where members can put quilted items for sale. Sign up to help put the show up and take it down and staff for the two days it runs. It’s a show that the whole community looks forward to seeing. In 2006 over 1,000 people came to see it. In short, participate enthusiastically and enjoy it. All this we do for the love of quilting, Ron Lundquist President, 294-7844 [email protected]

Retreat Update Well another retreat is behind us and we are looking forward to next year already! Our new retreat chairs are Lesa Bame and Sandy Hartz. Both were new retreaters this year. Please feel free to approach them, if you haven’t already, to help them out in anyway you can. Seeing as I have also taken up newsletter space for lecture and workshop information let me just say THANKS FOR SUCH A GREAT TIME. Retreat Committee 2008. Shari Brindley

Attention Fons & Porter Subscribers Because of confusion on the submission of new and renewal subscriptions for the Fons and Porter Love of Quilting Magazine, members who subscribed/renewed through the Guild since October 2007 need to contact Connie Combs to verify their subscriptions. Contact Connie at: 429-3281 (leave a message with your name and number if she is not home or e-mail her at [email protected]) Secret Stitchers We are looking for someone to head up the Secret Stitchers group. Secret Stitchers is about getting to know someone in the guild that you don’t already know and may never have known until you were paired with him or her. You give someone an inexpensive gift every month and they don’t know who you are and you don’t know who you’re getting your gift from. The gift exchange will go for six months and when the time is up you will unveil yourself to your newly found friend or surprise your old friend who never knew it was you. Maximum exchange spending should be $2.50 per month - the cost of a nice card, fat quarter or bag of candy. Please call Shari Brindley (our current Secret Stitcher chair) at 937-372-8861, and she can answer any questions. Sunshine News No news is good news! If you hear of a member who could use our support, please give Lee Peterson a call at 9374397298.

April 3rd Monday Stitch-In The evening stitch-in held on the third Monday of the month will be held at 7 p.m. on April 21st at Chris Kettler’s home. The address is 6918 Morrow Dr., Dayton. Her telephone number is 9378906023. Please call Chris for directions and to let her know you’ll be coming. Enjoy an evening with friends and get some of your quilting and piecing done! Quilted Tree Ornaments As a member of TWIG 17, I am asking my fellow Miami Valley Quilters’ Guild members to make quilted Christmas tree ornaments for a designer tree that would be at the 2008 Festival of Trees/Sugarplum in November. The guild would receive publicity for designing the ornaments on the tree and free entrance tickets to go to the Sugarplum on Saturday. The ornament size should be small, such as postcard size, and the color would need be red, green or white or a combination of these. I would collect ornaments monthly at the meetings each montht. The last month that I could collect would be in September. Thank you in advance for your support for the Dayton Children’s Medical Center Festival of Trees/Sugarplum event. Connie Combs TWIG 17—20+ year member Note: Pictures of the ornaments submitted are posted on the website (www.miamivalleyquiltersguild.org in case you do not know). Check them out. Opportunity to Learn, Create and Laugh at Local Quilt Shop Do you have an unfinished Judy Neimeyer quilt? Are you interested in doing a Twisted Bargello? As I have mentioned at the quilt guild meeting, several of my friends and I have unfinished Judy Neimeyer quilts. We are also on a crusade to finish them!!! So if you have one that needs to be finished or have just bought the pattern and want to have a few laughs and some fun, please join us. Also, if you saw all the beautiful Twisted Bargello quilts that were being done at retreat (either at retreat or in the pictures posted on the website (www.miamivalleyquiltersguild.org in case you do not know) and gave me your name, I have information!!! Appalachian Quilts in Enon is letting us use their classroom. It will hold up to 20 participants with machines. We only have a few rules that aren’t hard to follow. Our patterns must not be Xeroxed - Cynthia could lose her store over this. We can’t let that happen. Also any food or drink must be kept in the classroom areas at all times! Cynthia has ordered 20 of the Twisted Bargello patterns!!! Yeah!! So, if you want to prepay and get it reserved, it will cost $17.95. It will be sold at the store for $20. The discount will only apply for prepay. So, if you need a pattern give her a call (Appalachian Quilts 9378630070). Here are the dates: April 3 6 – 8 p.m.Judy Niemeyer UFO’s April 24 6 – 8 p.m.Twisted Bargello We will go over pattern and fabric choices/answer questions and get started May 8 6 – 8 p.m.Twisted Bargello We will start sewing stradas/start construction of rows May 22 6 – 8 p.m.Niemeyer UFO’s/Twisted Bargello - sew, sew, sew As you can see, I have a general plan of what we are going to accomplish. I will also give homework to keep you moving. Now if you miss an evening or don’t get the homework done, don’t worry you’ll catch up the next time. We are going to be laid back. Some ladies really took off and about 5–6 of us had the tops done in 5 weeks! I figured that once the Twisted ladies got started both groups could combine and sit and sew together. Let me know if you have any questions. I’m excited to get started and finish my Niemeyer. And maybe even start another Twisted!!! Susan Hill 937-426-4740 Directions to Appalachian Quilts: Take I-675 North to Exit 24 (Enon). Turn right at the light. It’s 2.3 miles on the right. Look for the “Howard’s IGA”. Turn in here.
