PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of NURS 211 and concurrent
enrollment in NURS 241
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course provides the student with the knowledge
to become an effective nurse manager and expands
the area of legalities and professional development.
COURSE OUTCOMES:
1. Apply management skills in the organization and prioritization of client care to promote quality client outcomes.
2. Demonstrate appropriate delegation of tasks and assignments.
3. Recognize the challenge to deliver quality care with fiscal responsibility.
4. Identify the roles of nursing, regulatory agencies, and standards of care concerning the delivery of quality care.
5. Demonstrate an understanding of legal and ethical standards relevant to nursing practice.
6. Identify personal responsibilities related to achieving and maintaining licensure.
7. Demonstrate an understanding of professional liability, malpractice, and risk management.
8. Utilize skills to prepare for initial and future employment as a registered nurse.
9. Recognize the role and responsibilities of the nurse concerning a variety of workplace issues.
10. Demonstrate an understanding of various strategies that may be used to resolve conflict.
11. Identify strategies for personal application to prevent or minimize reality shock and burnout.
12. Promote a positive image of nursing through a public media source and a mentoring relationship with beginning nursing students.

METHOD OF
INSTRUCTION: This course utilizes lecture, discussion, audio-visual
materials, computer lab resources, written assignments,
experiential assignments, selected readings, and case
studies.
EVALUATION
METHOD: Upon completion of the course the student will demonstrate
achievement of the course objectives by obtaining a final
minimum grade of seventy-eight percent (78%) as
measured by written exams and assignments.
All assignments are mandatory and must be completed to successfully pass the course.

PROGRESSION
POLICY: Successful completion of the nursing program requires
academic achievement of a minimal grade of “C” (78%) in
this course.
ATTENDANCE POLICY: Attendance is mandatory. Excessive absenteeism may result in course failure. Maximum that may be missed is 7 hours. It is the responsibility of the student to contact the instructor as soon as possible when an absence occurs. See the School of Nursing Student Handbook for specific guidelines.
TESTING POLICY: Students are expected to take all examinations as
scheduled. Make-up policy with regards to examinations is
described in the School of Nursing Handbook. Special
learning needs, including testing modifications, need to be
documented and on file with Academic Services.
HONESTY POLICY:
Cheating or plagiarizing will absolutely not be tolerated at Southwestern Michigan College. Any student found cheating or plagiarizing material in any manner may be assigned a failing semester/session grade in this course. A second such incident while at SMC could result in suspension or expulsion from the instituition. A student found in violation of this section of the syllabus will not be allowed to drop this course. Additional detail regarding cheating and/or plagiarism may be found elsewhere in this syllabus.

You will be taking a series of five computer based exams. You will do
this on your own time…when you can and when the computers are
available (please check class schedule…although they are also available
on the computers at the TLC at the library). You must pass each exam at
85% or higher. A guide to these exams is available on Wired under
My Courses.
Students are expected to frequently access SMC Wired
for course communications from the instructor.
Level II 1. Provides direct care, based on the nursing process, for
TERMINAL clients with well-defined nursing diagnoses, within a
COMPETENCIES: variety of settings, and who have simple to complex
health care needs
. 2. Utilizes comprehensive therapeutic communication skills
when interacting with clients, families, and other health
care team members.
3. Organizes comprehensive aspects of care for clients with
simple to complex health needs in a variety of settings.
4. Assesses client's needs for information in order to
formulate a teaching plan; implements and modifies
individualized teaching plans, and evaluates client's
learning.
5. Demonstrates responsibility and accountability to the
profession of nursing as well as collecting data for
nursing research and utilizing research findings.
GUIDELINES FOR 1. Assignments are due on, or before, the day designated.
WRITTEN WORK: See the School of Nursing Handbook for rules
regarding late written assignments.
2. Written work that requires referencing is to use APA
(American Psychological Association) formatting.
3. Assignments are to be neat in appearance, legible, and organized. Proper grammar, word usage, punctuation, spelling, and sentence structure are expected.
4. Individual assignments are to follow the assignment
guidelines or formats provided by the instructor
