General Laboratory Safety Guidelines

1. Safety Glasses:

All people in the lab must wear industrial quality safety glasses during all work periods, including clean-up time. Cover goggles are required to be worn by all students who are working with liquids that could be hazardous to the eyes.

2. Clothing:

A. Sleeves must be rolled up above the elbows.

B. No loose or dangling jewelry in lab area. All jewelry such as rings, watches, bracelets, etc., must be removed.

C. Loose or baggy clothing such as ties, coats, sweatshirts or sweaters are not to be worn in the lab.

D. Sandals and open toed shoes are not to be worn in the lab.

3. Machines:

A. Never use a machine or powered hand tool (drill, dremel) unless you have been instructed inits proper operation by the teacher and have been cleared to use the machine.

B. All machine guards must be in the proper working position before the machine is put into operation.

C. Adjustments to machines should only be made when they are OFF and unplugged.

D. Do not have any part of thebody in the cutting path of any machine or power tool.

E. Don't force any material into any machine or power tool.

F. Never stand inline with the work piece when starting a machine.

G. Do not distract or talk to anyone while you or they are operating power equipment or power tools.

H. Never walk away from a machine and leave it running or in motion.

I. Turn air ventilation system on or open garage bay door when painting.

J. If any machine or tool appears to be damaged report it immediately to the teacher. DO NOT USE IT.

4. Hand tools:

A. Bench vices are to be used appropriately - clamp your work piece only, leave bench vice barin vertical position at end of class.

B. Never point a tool towards yourself or others (X-acto knives, screw drivers, chisels, etc.)

C. When using any cutting tool, always cut away from yourself/your fingers. Do not hurry yourcut.

D. When using any hand tool, the material must be clamped to the table or in a bench vise.

E. When using any type of file hold the handle and tip. Do not rub two or more files together, reportloose handles to the teacher and no "flinging."

5. General:

A. Students are not to work in a lab unless a technology education teacher is present.

B. Report all accidents or injuries as soon as possible, no matter how slight, to the teacher.

C. Check with the teacher before operating any equipment in the classroom.

D. Do not throw anything in the lab at any time.

E. Do not leave anything on the floor.

F. Place all scraps in the proper location (waste basket, storage area, etc.)

G. Fooling around or disruptive behavior will not be tolerated.

H. Never attempt to lift heavy objects alone.

I. Clean up all spilled liquids immediately.

J. Long hair must be tied back.

K. You must keep your feet on the floor at all times.

L. Know the location of all emergency exits.

M. Know the locations of emergency stop buttons and only push in then event of an emergency.

N. Do not swing hanging drop cords.

O. When using a hot glue gun never pull out the glue stick and keep fingers, etc. away from thehot tip and hot glue. Do not play with hot glue guns.

P. Keep your fingers at least 6" away from all cutting surfaces and hot materials unless otherwise notified.

Q. If you get burned, flush with cold water immediately and notify the teacher.

R. If you get cut, wrap the cut area in paper towel andnotify the teacher.

S. Do not use any electrical device near water.

T. Report any hazardous situation to the teacher immediately.

U. No running or horseplay in the classroom or lab area at any time.

V. Do not leave nails/screws protruding from materials once materials are separated.

W. Setup and use ladders appropriately and as instructed.

X. Remove ID badges before working in the lab area.

6. Specific regulations that apply to particular machines:

A. Specific machine safety will bediscussedand handouts supplied to students by the teacher at a later time.
