Course Description

Provide students with a basic foundation in the field of economics. The course has five sections: fundamental concepts, microeconomics, macroeconomics, international economics, and personal finance. In each area, students are introduced to major concepts and themes concerning that aspect of economics.

Book used - Economics: Principles in Action Arthur O’ Sullivan & Steven Sheffrin – Prentice Hall 2005

These are all suggestions, if money is a problem let me know and we can work it out

******SCHOOL ISSUED IPADS SHOULD BE BROUGHT CHARGED DAILY! You will not be allowed to charge during class time. Please use your iPad as a learning tool, and not as a gaming or social media tool. I suggest leaving your iPad on airplane mode when you are not using it for class assignments.******

You will also be expected to visit my Online Classroom daily. Please make a direct link to my Online Classroom on your iPad.

4. Plenty of Loose leaf paper ---Welcome to History!

5. Highlighter – this is VERY useful when studying your notes

6. Markers, crayons, or colored pencils ---YOU NEED THESE ASAP!!!!!! You can leave them in a box in my class at your own discretion.

Course Requirements:

For each unit students will complete:

1. 20- 30 Vocabulary words per unit (A unit will last about two to four weeks)- Each student will be assigned specific words each unit to create illustrations for a quiz grade.

2. Quiz after each Chapter or Topic – These can come in any shape or form!

3. Test after each unit consisting of two or more of the following- multiple choice, short answer, fill in the blank, matching, and essay. ** I will usually give you at least a week notice before each test**

4. 1-3 Major projects per unit for a test grade. ** Each project will have a DETAILED rubric that I require parents to sign at the start of each project**

5. 2- 5 mini projects per unit for a quiz grade ** These are usually done in class**

6. 1-2 video summaries per unit ** These are always creative and rarely done in essay form**

7. Organized notebook with dividers labeled: 1. EQ and GPS 2. Class Notes 3. Daily Work

4. Test/ Quizzes 5. Misc ** Each Student should have separate notebook for each class**

8. PARTICIPATION—we will have daily discussions and you should be involved!!

9. Weekly writing assignments – I will provide you with a topic each week. These will be done in Advisement

10. Daily assignments and Homework as needed.

** Note: Schedule is tentative and could change due to inclement weather, assemblies or other factors which affect the school calendar. Too, the rate of student mastery and/or need for re-teaching may alter the schedule.

Course Outline/Framework:

Unit 1 : Fundamentals of Economics: What is economics? Scarcity - limited resources – distribution of resources – how the individual, business, gov’t and entrepreneur form the economy– wants v. needs – factors of production – rational decision making – marginal costs and marginal benefits – voluntary exchange - productivity.

Unit 2: Economic Systems: Discuss how countries answer the three economic questions of what to produce, how to produce, and who will consume? – Compare Market, Mixed Market, and Command economies- focus on Market Economies – Business change to technology – growth- Market structures – identify oligopoly, monopoly, pure competition – sole proprietorships, partnerships, and corporation.

Unit 3: Supply and Demand: How households, business and government interact – flow of goods, services, and money in the circular flow – how laws of supply and demand affect distribution – graph supply and demand curves – competition – customer incentives – prices.

Unit 4: Macroeconomics: Goals in Macro – employment and unemployment – GDP – CPI – Types of Unemployment – Business cycle –– Inflation –***** This unit will most likely be broken down into two smaller units ( Monetary & Fiscal).

Unit 5: Monetary and Fiscal Policy: The Federal Reserve – tools of Monetary Policy – Taxing – Governments’ role in Fiscal Policy

Unit 6: International Economics: Absolute and Comparative Advantage – Foreign trade barriers, tariffs, embargoes, standards and subsides – EU, NAFTA, and ASEAN –Arguments for free trade- Exchange Rates – U.S. purchasing power.

Unit 7: Personal Finance: SMART goals – Rational spending and saving – Banks and financial institutions – credit – insurance and risk – management – workers – earnings – investment- stocks, bonds, and mutual funds.

Homework Policy:

Students will be assigned to after-school detention on the 3rd offense (and each offense thereafter) of not having completed at least 70% of assigned homework.

Late Assignments:

Late daily and homework assignments will be docked 10pts per day, but no late assignments past five will be accepted. Late Projects should never occur because due dates are given two weeks in advance. If you are out the day a project is due, please make arrangements to have your project dropped off in the front office OR contact me via email that day.

Make-up Work Policy:

Students whose absences are excused have the opportunity to make up work missed. However, it is the student's responsibility to get with the teacher to find out what work was missed within three days of returning to school. Missed assignments should be turned in NO LATER than five days upon returning. Additional time may be granted by the administration for completion of makeup work taking into consideration the number of absences and the extenuating circumstance of the absences. NO LATE work, assignments, tests, or projects will be accepted after 2 ½ weeks of each progress report (sent home every four weeks) per the Polk School District Handbook. Ex: You cannot make-up missed assignments from August once we have reached September 30th because the first progress report will be sent home September 10, 2015.

Class Policies/Rules:

All policies of the Polk School District Board of Education and student handbook will be enforced.

1. Respect! This means you respect adults and peers alike. A positive and respectful attitude will take you far in life!

2. Come prepared to class. Bring iPads charged, paper, pencils, and notebooks daily. You will not use your phone during class...... NO CELL PHONES!

3. Take notes. Notes are vital in social studies, and studying these notes will lead to successful grades in my class.

4. Check my Online Classroom at least once during the school day, and again at home.

5. Pay attention during class. Sleeping is not an option.

Final Exam:

Students in this course must take the Georgia Milestones EOC created by GADOE .

Exam Exemption Procedures for RHS

Students will take a midterm worth 20% for first semester, and a final exam worth 20% for second semester in non-EOC courses. Students meeting the following criteria may exempt the midterm and/or the final exam. NO STUDENT IS EXEMPT FROM STATE MANDATED TESTS SUCH AS THE SLO OR EOC. There will, however, be a final exam in these courses weighted as a regular test that students may exempt.

Exemption criteria:

1.  The student must have an 85+ in the course they wish to exempt.

2.  No more than three excused or unexcused absences PER SEMESTER.

3.  No more than three tardies PER SEMESTER.

4.  No administrative discipline referrals for the entire year.

Grading Policy:

Tests & Project 60%

Homework, writing, tasks, daily participation 20%

EOC 20%

Re-test Policy:

Guidelines for re-testing:

Re-tests are allowed in every subject. The student MUST attend remediation before a re-test will be given. The student must attend mandatory two day remediation prior to re-test. For my classes, you are expected to attend tutoring the FIRST MONDAY & TUESDAY FOLLOWING A RETURNED TEST! You must then make arrangements to re-test within ONE WEEK of tutoring. ANY student may re-test, including students that passed the test. Students will receive the higher of their two grades, but are limited to only ONE re-test per test. Georgia Milestones’ (formally EOCT), SLO’s, research papers, and projects DO NOT QUALIFY for re-test.
