Summary:

This position is an integral part of a grant-funded pilot project to demonstrate the efficacy of properly training dental students in the utilization of dental auxiliaries.

The Dental Auxiliary Utilization Educator (DAU Educator) is supervised by the Dental Director or designate. The DAU Educator instructs UCLA pre-doctoral dental students, individually, in techniques of four-handed dentistry. Use of four-handed dentistry techniques greatly increases the efficiency of the dentist and quality of services in the delivery of oral health care. A well-trained four-handed dentistry team is essential to Dental Clinic operations.

The Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

A.  Teach pre-clinical session for pre-doctoral student dentist in techniques of four-handed dentistry

·  Demonstrate and instruct student in the application of operatory preparation for the four-handed dentistry clinical session.

·  Guide student in the practice of ergonomic and motion economy principles in clinical care

·  Demonstrate and instruct student in instrument transfer protocols

·  Conduct a half-day pre-clinical session of pediatric dentistry clinical procedures to be performed with a dental manikin.

·  Review with student criteria for evaluation of student’s progress

B.  Participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of a dental auxiliary utilization pilot program.

·  Review and critique didactic course materials.

·  Assist in development of student dentist evaluation tool.

·  Meet regularly with UCLA Pediatric Dental faculty and SFCHC dental and administrative staff to review progress of pilot program

·  Complete reports and data collection instruments for the purpose of program evaluation.

C.  Clinical instruction in four-handed dentistry.

·  Review daily schedule to set up appropriate trays and instruments

·  Apply protocols for four-handed dentistry during clinical instruction sessions, working individual with the student dentist.

·  Guide and correct student dentist’s four-handed technique as necessary

·  Evaluate student progress after each clinical session.

D.  Perform dental assisting duties as needed to support the student dentist in providing pediatric dental care.

·  Operate dental radiography equipment for the purpose of oral radiography if the dental assistant has complied with the requirements of Section 1656

·  Obtain medical history, vitals, make chart entries, and assure completion of forms and signatures

·  Maintain a sterile and neat working environment according to current infection control procedures

·  Operatory prep and breakdown including normal clean-up of operatories and cabinets

·  Prepare and sterilize instruments and equipment

·  Provide patients with instructions for oral care following dental treatment procedures

·  Assist student dentist in teaching patients appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health (tooth brushing, flossing and nutritional counseling)

·  Performing office management tasks that often require the use of a personal computer, experience with dental electronic records necessary

·  Stock operatories and maintain clinical supply inventory

·  Responsible for designated operatory supply inventory and ensuring routine maintenance of equipment

·  Place bases, liners, bonding agents and chemically prepare teeth for bonding

·  Remove excess cement from surfaces of teeth with a hand instrument

·  Apply Topical Fluoride and Polish coronal surfaces of the teeth

Supervisory Responsibilities: This item provides direct supervision of student dentist activities. This item does not provide direct supervision to staff.

Skills/Qualifications: Skill in providing professional education, knowledge and experience in four-handed dentistry, clinical skills, ability to communicate with students, patients and faculty, good patient relation skills, creating a safe/effective environment, oral health promotion and maintenance, procedural skills, documentation skills, dependability, strong organizational skills, ability to deal with difficult people in busy environment, computer skills, and team work.

Required Education/License/Certificates: Registered Dental Assistant license in the state of California, BLS certification, Dental Assistant School certification or previous Dental Office experience, Radiation Safety Certification.

California Driver’s License: Not required for this classification.

Continuing Education: SFCHC Mandated training

Language Skills: English, Spanish preferred but not essential
