I.  Trade Analysis

Introduction & Application

A Ruggedized Camera Encoder (RCE) is a compact and robust system that analyzes a stream of image data in real-time. Typically, video analytics are completed using post processing techniques on a unit that is separate from the camera stream. This system will eliminate the need for post processing, which cuts down on turnaround time and the need for a secondary system.

The goal of this project is to deliver a working prototype that will have a small enclosure, with two tethered camera inputs, acquiring HD 1080p 30fps image data. The system will be capable of processing the image data in real-time running different video analytics algorithms. It will be capable of streaming compressed image data over GigE to a standard video client for diagnostics. The purpose of this document is to provide a detailed treatment of the SSD hard drives.

Microsemi TRRUST-Stor SSD

http media bestofmicro com 5 L 333273 original trrust jpgThe TRRUST-STOR is a SATA SSD, which supports up to 1 TB non-volatile storage. It features a hardware-implementation of AES-256 encryption—a feature that is necessary to ensure security of sensitive information. Furthermore, the product may be purchased with ruggedized SATA connectors. Information may be transferred at a rate of 3Gbs to and from the storage unit.

The 1 TB model is MSD1TBAM2R. To the left is a depiction of the storage unit; below it is a depiction of the ruggedized SATA connector. The device supports up to 100,000 insertions (with 50% lower contact resistance) and is vibration and shock immune. The device is the standard 2.5” in height. However, custom form factors are available. Typical configuration, as advertised, is an FPGA host with DDR3 RAM. Storage device uses SLC NAND flash technology.

The Delkin S225 (Iridium) SATA SSD is a ruggedized storage system that utilizes SLC and MLC NAND flash technologies. Delkin Devices highlights the temperature tolerance of the device. This system is advertised as being capable of operating in military and aerospace applications. Furthermore, the device is capable of self-monitoring and is designed to work with a PC. The SATA interface operates at 3.0Gbs.

Transcend 1 TB USB 3.0 External Hard Drive

http ecx images amazon com images I 61was6HYHjL SL1500 jpgThe Transcend is a 1TB “Military-Grade” (as advertised—meets MIL-STD-810F) hard disk drive. It features advanced 3-stage shock protection and has an exterior designed to properly respond to shock situations; supports 5Gbs in USB 3.0 mode and 480Mbs in USB 2.0 mode. This device also supports AES-256 encryption. The Transcend is designed to be used with a PC. Furthermore, the device is available at a low price point (under $80.00).

Memoright GTR-2S SATA SSD

The GTR-2S SSD is a high-end storage device, used for mission critical applications. This product features SLC (Single Level Cell) NAND technology, which is more expensive than the alternative technology (MLC—Multi-Level Cell), but yields a higher MTBF and higher reliability. It may be optionally upgraded to feature IP65 compliant waterproofing. Furthermore, it has a higher-than-average shock/vibration resistance (10-2000Hz); uses SATA II. It supports AES-256 as well as several other security and reliability features.

Proteus Plus

http www psism com aprosata jpgThe Proteus Plus is a compact ruggedized portable SSD. It features SLC NAND Flash, for high levels of data retention and reliability (BER below 1 in 1014). Furthermore, it has competitive sustained read/write times (comparable values to other top rugged SSDs—250MBs). It is MIL-STD-810 compliant and has SATA II interface.

II.  Conclusion

Top SSDs in this field are typically MIL-STD-810F/G compliant. All the products that have been listed are not necessarily completely utilizable for this application because some come in superfluous packaging (namely the Transcend). The Transcend has been presented for the sake of comparative completeness; however it will fall short in terms of reliability because it uses a HDD instead of an SSD. Here are the selection recommendations, based upon optimizations for specific benefits:

1.  Best capacity: the best drive in terms of available capacity is a tie between the Microsemi TRRUST and the Transcend. However, in this selection, the TRRUST is the clear winner because it features an SSD.

2.  Best cost/capacity: The Transcend is anticipated to be the clear winner because it features an HDD instead of an SSD, which is far more affordable.

3.  Best Rugged: The Memoright GTR-2S is the most robust SSD presented here as it is an SSD, has great shock resistance, and is specified to resist humidity.

4.  Best MTBF: This comparison is not complete, as not all the devices have listed this specification. However, based upon the available data, the Delkins Iridium S225 is the superior choice, boasting 2.7 million hours average lifetime before failure.

5.  Best Size/Weight: This comparison is not complete, as not all the devices have listed this specification. However, based upon the available data, the Microsemi TRRUST is likely the best choice. The device is relatively light and all the sizes of the drives are assumed to be standard 2.5”.

In light of this analysis, the Microsemi TRRUST is a desirable product to pursue for the storage system. Here are the reasons why this is likely the most viable candidate:

1.  It is available in a variety of capacities, which allows application specific configuration with minor modifications to the system.

2.  Is rugged enough to meet the requirements of this project. The shock resistance and humidity resistance are comparable to (or better than) that of the all the other storage systems presented in this analysis.

3.  This system also has a high level of reliability (MTBF), falling just short of the best on the list.

Notes:

Drives typically come in 7mm and 9.5mm versions.
