Pharmacists Registration Act

The Pharmacists Registration Act (PRA) is currently under revision. The main changes proposed are:
1.  Singapore Pharmacy Board will be known as Singapore Pharmacy Council.
2.  Number of Council members will increase from 6 to 11.
3.  Professional registration is de-linked from practice. Which means that pharmacists will have to hold a valid practising certificate in order to practise pharmacy.
4.  Practising certificates are issued only if pharmacists are able to meet the minimum stipulated number of CPE points within a specified qualifying period.
5.  Additional Registers, including a Specialists’ Register to list pharmacist specialists.
6.  More rigorous disciplinary inquiry structure.
Revisions to the draft PRA are to be read in Parliament. Due to the General Elections in May and current ongoing renovations to the Parliament House, Parliament sitting will only re-commence in Nov 2006. All proposed changes will take effect after the new Act is accepted and passed in Parliament.

Category 1A ad hoc events

Approval has been given by the Board to accept events relevant to pharmacists, organised by non-accredited providers (local and overseas) for claims under category 1A ad hoc events. These can include events organised by CME providers who have yet to obtain SPB accreditation as CPE providers.
To claim CPE points for such events, select ‘Claim Category 1A Points’, followed by ‘Ad hoc events’ under Event Type. Keep all evidence of attendance for this CPE points claim in your dossier. Evidence of attendance includes receipt, brochure, handouts, self-assessment questionnaires etc.

Reduced CPE points requirement for inactive pharmacists

Pharmacists who are not in active pharmacy practice may opt to stay on the Register, under inactive status. This will involve a lower fee and reduced CPE points requirement.
An inactive status is applicable to the following only:
a) pharmacist is not working;
b) pharmacist is working in non-pharmacy sectors.
Pharmacists opting for inactive status will have to submit a declaration form, and abide by the stipulations specified by the Singapore Pharmacy Board. Implementation details will be announced at a later date.
