Quick Guide: Tax Information
Tax Tips
- While GW is a tax-exempt organization, it is not always possible to get tax-exempt status at certain locations
- GW is not tax-exempt for FOOD, HOTEL, CAR RENTALS, AIRFARE, or other state/federal exclusions
- Certain businesses will not honor tax exempt status online or in person
- SEE CHART BELOW FOR TAX EXEMPTION APPLICABILITY
- JP Morgan Chase will collect tax information for payments to vendors (no need to be registered as a vendor with GW) if paid using P-Card
- Gifts (including gift cards), prizes and awards MAY BE SUBJECT to taxation for all GW employees
- If additional tax questions arise, contact GW Tax Department
Tax Exemption Information

- In order to qualify for tax exempt status, you must provide the vendor with GW’s Tax Exemption Certificates
Contractor Tax Information
- Independent sole proprietors/ contractors must go through a worker classification review through GW’s Tax Department to determine whether the services provided classifies them as a GW employee or not.
- This must be completed before Supplier Registration can happen
- Student organization advisors will fill out the Worker Classification Review Form
- Advisors will give the form to Coordinator, DSA Financial Services
- EXEMPTIONS FROM THIS PROCESS ARE AS FOLLOWS:
- Honoraria (speakers or lectures not through a speaking agency)
- Panel moderation
- Conference attendance
- GUEST ARTISTS AND ENTERTAINERS
- DJ/ Band
- Comedian
- GW Tax Department will make determination if the individual should be considered GW Employee or Third-Party contractor
- GW Tax Department will return signedWorker Classification Review Form which must be submitted along with Supplier Registration Form and W-9 (W-8EN if non-US individual) if they are not currently registered
- Worker Classification Review Form is valid for 2 years
