Directions: Copy down the purpose and answer all questions in this inquiry. Remember to include part of the question into your answer.

Purpose: How do the wavelengths of different color (visible light) compare to each other?

Procedures:

  1. Get a sheet of graph paper from the teacher.
  2. You will need 6 different colored pencils. (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Violet)
  3. Have the graph paper taller than it is longer
  4. Give a title for the graph at the top of the page.
  5. Number the intervals on the X-axis by 1’s. (From 1 – 30)
  6. Title the X axis “relative wavelength”
  7. Number the intervals on the Y-axis by 1’s. (From 1 – 35)
  8. Label the Y-axis “relative wave height”
  9. Using the correct colored pencils, plot the points of the “red” (Y-axis) and Relative wavelength (X-axis).
  10. Connect the dots to create a line graph.
  11. Continue this process of graphing the different colors vs. the wavelengths of all the 6 waves from the data table below use the correct colored pencil for each of the 6 different waves.

Analyzing the Data:

  1. How long was the Violet wavelength?
  2. How long was the Blue wavelength?
  3. How long was the Green wavelength?
  4. How long was the Yellow wavelength?
  5. How long was the Orange wavelength?
  6. How long was the Red wavelength?
  7. What color has the longest wavelength?
  8. How much longer is the red wavelength than the blue?
  9. How much longer is the Green than the violet?
  10. Describe a pattern that you see in this graph in dealing with colors?
  11. What color has the most energy and why?
  12. What color has the least energy?
