Description:

This course is an examination of the use of assessment and testing instruments in counseling. Discussions include the purpose of counseling, education, and psychological assessment; client welfare; competence to use and interpret tests; informed consent; release of information; proper diagnosis; test selection; conditions of test administration; diversity and culture; test scoring and interpretation; test security; obsolete and outdated test results and test construction in counseling. 3 hours

Rationale:

The student will be introduced to important assessment/appraisal principles of the individual through: testing includes the development of a framework for understanding the individual, methods of data-gathering and interpretation, case study approaches, individual and group psychological and educational testing and the study of individual differences with consideration of ethnic, cultural and gender factors.

CACREP - The material in this course is designed to meet the Council on Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) curriculum standards for masters training. The specific standard (II. G. 7. A-G) states that students are required to "have curricular experiences and demonstrated knowledge” in assessment that provide for the student “an understanding of individual and group approaches to assessment and evaluation.”

Ohio - This course meets requirements for Ohio Administrative Code 4757-01 (F) (1-12) and 4757-13-01(A)(1)(d)(ix).

Kentucky - This course meets requirements for Kentucky Revised Statute (KRS) 335.525 (1) (c); (1) (d) 5, 335.527 (1) (a) 5, and Kentucky Administrative Regulations (KAR) 201 KAR 36:070 Section 3. (5), and KAR 201 KAR 36:060 Section 2. (2) (e).

Indiana - This course meets requirements for Indiana Code (IC) 25-23. 6-8. 5-3, Section 3. (1), (F) and Indiana Administrative Code 839 IAC 1-5-5 Section 5. (5).

Objectives: A student that successful completes this will course be able to:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of the wide range of Counseling Assessments/Appraisal/Psychological/Tests/Inventory’s available. (CACREP II G 7 b & g, CHMC G 1, 2, H 1, 3)

2. Students will demonstrate that they have learned counseling assessment theory and practice as to its history and development. (CACREP II G 7 a)

3. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the technical and methodological concepts and principles related to assessment/testing. (CACREP II G 7 b, c, d, e & g)

4. Students will demonstrate an understanding of assessment/test administration, scoring, and interpretive practices and procedures. (CACREP II G 7 b & g, CHMC G 1, H 1, 2, 3)

5. Students will demonstrate an understanding of current problems and issues in assessment/appraisal/psychological/ testing. (CACREP II G 7 f & g, CHMC H2)

6. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the sensitive legal, ethical, and social implications of assessment/appraisal/psychological test use. (CACREP II G 7 f & g, )

If you cheat on an exam or turn in work that is not your own you will receive a 0 (zero) for that work, and the counseling academic committee and academic standards committee may take additional action. Please refer to your seminary handbook for complete details on the seminary policy on academic integrity.

Guidelines on Missed Work or Exams

Written assignments will be accepted late, but there will be a 10% per day penalty on all late work. Exams will not be given late unless there is a personal medical emergency or a family emergency. When the student is ill on the day of an exam he or she will have one week to make arrangements with the professor for taking the exam. The professor reserves the right to reduce the grade for the exam.

Assessment Expenses for Non Mac students:

Because Non Mac students do not pay the $75 program fee, they are required to pay the cost of each assessment we take in class. If you are a Non Mac student you will be required to pay the following amounts to the counseling center for the following assessments:

·  SCL-90-R: $5

·  Myers-Briggs: $5

·  Taylor-Johnson: $5

·  BDI-II: $5

·  BAI: $5

Methods & Procedures: This class is a hybrid class. The largest percentage of the class will be done online and utilize online discussion forums and online interaction. To fully participate in the class you must have a working knowledge base of computer skills and the ability to gain access to “Moodle” the online management system that we will be using. We will also engage is writing and assessment activities as well a three class meetings.

Requirements/Grading:

1.  Online Discussion participation—There will be an online discussion board for each of the thirteen units of study. These discussion/posts will need to demonstrate intelligent thoughts or questions about the reading materials. To obtain the maximum grade, you will need to make at least three posts per unit—(30%) (see Rubric for grading of posts)

2.  Three in class session participation—During our 3 in class sessions we will be practicing administering, scoring and presenting assessments. This will be your time to practice your skills. We will also be developing a case conceptualization for you to write your reports with. If the scheduled dates do not work with your schedule, please let me know as soon as possible so we can schedule alternate dates for you—(15%) (Meets Objectives 1 & 4)
