4. Trauma coordinators role descriptor documents:
Draft document submitted to the ODN Trauma steering group on the 3rd March 2016. Approved by the steering group to support peer review and the ‘Pan London Major Trauma System Local Criteria for Trauma Unit Performance Reviews 2016’ standards.
Since publication of the new Major Trauma Services Quality Indicators in April 2016 (https://www.tquins.nhs.uk/?menu=resources), RP to edit document for publication. / RP to edit coordinator role document to align with the 2016 major trauma services quality indicators. / By Friday 13th May
5. National Major Trauma Nursing Group (NMTNG) – update:
The new Major Trauma Services Quality Indicators have now been published and include new ‘emergency trauma nurse/AHP’ quality indicators (QI) for MTC, TU and Paediatric MTC sites.
RP briefly highlighted the key supporting documents:
a. Levels 1 -3 document
b. Level 2 educational standard descriptor
c. Peer review document to support the review of bespoke trauma courses.
d. The emergency nurse/AHP competencies:
o Adult Level 1
o Adult Level 2
o Paediatric Level 1
o Paediatric Level 2
RP advised attendees that all the associated supporting documents are now live on the TQuINS web site -https://www.tquins.nhs.uk/?menu=resources
It is important to note that for the TUs the new QI includes ‘or working towards’. This is a key to ensure TUs are not deemed to have failed the standard at peer review this year given the very short timeframe between publication and review in some networks. Nevertheless, TUs are expected to provide evidence of how they are going to work towards achieving the QI. / All – to ensure network colleagues are aware of the resources available and support peer review.
6. Critical Care trauma competencies:
AM presented the latest draft trauma critical care nursing competencies. JL and SL had forwarded comments and revisions to AM via e-mail ahead of this meeting. In addition AM had received trauma critical care competencies devised by Barts and the London which built on the current national CC3N competencies.
- The group discussed the format and layout in light of the new national emergency trauma nurse/AHP competencies. Group agreed that these new trauma competencies should be in keeping with the format and structure of the national CC3N competencies.
- AM also keen to include guidance for assessors in the final document.
- RP invited AM to the next NMTNG meeting in Birmingham on the 17th June 2016 to showcase this work. The NMTNG will be focussing on the development of a national set of trauma competencies for critical care to supplement the national CC3N competencies and RP is keen the PLTNG work forms part of the national development. / 1. AM to collate responses and edits and re-draft ahead of the NMTNG meeting on the 17th June 2016.

7. Trauma ward nursing competencies:
ME and JL leading on the development of the ward competencies. Recognition that there is overlap between the critical care and trauma ward competencies.
Group discussion about format, structure, etc.:
- Agreed that there should be at least 2 levels of competence to reflect the Band 5/Junior Band 6 level and Senior Band 6/Band 7 level.
- Agreed that there would be a suite of competencies from which trauma wards at MTCs and Tus could pick from dependent on their particular patient case mix.
- ME and JL to look at the NMTNG competencies format and structure which could be used for the ward competencies.
- RP invited ME and JL to attend the next NMTNG meeting in Birmingham on the 17th June 2016. The NMTNG will be focussing on trauma ward competency development and RP keen to ensure this work is reflected nationally.
Trauma ward education:
Group discussed the need for specific trauma care education and development. RP highlighted that Lisa Thomas (Major Trauma Nurse Practitioner – Bristol) was keen to pilot the ‘Trauma Care After Resuscitation’ (TCAR) course - http://www.tcarprograms.org/ , which she had attended. Lisa is looking for a London link to set up a course. / 1. RP – send ME and JL NMTNG competencies in word format.

6. Major Trauma ODN steering group – Update:
· RP showed the group the PLTNG section on the new London Trauma System (LTS) website - http://www.c4ts.qmul.ac.uk/nursing-and-ahp/pan-london-trauma-nursing-group
RP keen PLTNG members disseminate this information out to ‘grass roots’ level.
· Steering group currently focussed on:
- Development of ‘local measures’ to supplement the national measures. This includes our work on the trauma coordinators descriptors.
- LD discussed the presentation at the ODN meeting on the 5th May of the Major Trauma Signposting Partnership programme at St George’s Hospital. In short this is a partnership between St George’s and Cardinal Management who have worked with St George’s to select law firms to provide legal advice to trauma patients. In addition the Citizens Advice Bureau provides an in-patient service to support trauma patients.
RP/LD to provide further information to the group and contact details of Leila Razavi, SW Trauma ODN Manager who has led on the project.
7. Network feedback
· NW and NE: ME, JL and MT - 1st joint network nursing meeting on the 23rd February 2016. 4 hospitals represented. Plan to hold a 2nd meeting in due course. Key aim to disseminate PLTNG developments to MTCs and Tus network wide.
MT also reported on-going discussions re: East of England ambulance service major trauma triage tool which, differs from the London Ambulance Service in particular in relation to mechanism of injury. This results in patient being conveyed to Barnet Hospital without a pre-alert who would otherwise trigger the London Ambulance Service triage tool.
MT to liaise with Nicola Batrick (governance lead) in the NW as this may impact both networks.
· SW: HW - March 2016 meeting had poor attendance but further meetings planned.
· SE: RP – SELKaM hold clinical reference group (CRG) meetings and the nursing CRG and emergency department CRG have combined as many nursing members were already attending the emergency department meeting. 1st combined meeting held on the 17th March 2016.
8. AOB:
- AS – discussed the current development of the network (NW) wide major incident plan and whether there would be a Pan-London template. LD updated the group on the current work to develop a mass casualty incident Pan-Networks policy. In addition the EPRR lead at NHS England London is Liz Clark should members wish to make contact.
