P7 Enterprise Project

The primary seven classes carried out an enterprise project that was to raise money for the P.7 Leavers Disco. The two classes participated in making the Christmas treats and gifts and sold them at the Christmas fair.

Firstly, the classes learned about business terms to help them with this enterprise project such as: profit, loss, revenue, budget, stock and expenses.

Kate Ashcroft, who worked for Business Gateway came to visit the classes and explained how to run a business. She also told the classes what problems they might have when doing the enterprise project.

The classes decided what to make and sell but before this they carried out some research by speaking to the staff at the café, Mrs Thomson and Mrs White, which was important so that they didn’t make and sell the same things.

Both brainstormed ideas on what to make, by getting ideas online and from craft books. They then researched the resources and how much it would cost for each item. A vote was then taken from both classes and the top 13 ideas were agreed on.

The pupils then got split into groups and started to put together a resource list for what was needed to produce these items, and these resources were then costed.

Mrs Carder and Mrs Thomson then sourced what was needed. However, the pupils then encountered a problem when they realised making slime wasn’t working. They had to change the slime to another idea, which was skittles and marshmallow jars, this proved to be beneficial as it taught the pupils how to be flexible.

The pupils then sent out letters to family members and carers to invite them to the Christmas market, there were posters around the school to advertise it. A group of pupils also went round classes to show the products to encourage the sale of them.

Another group of pupils set up the stall and displayed the items ready for sale and checked the quality of the products to make sure they were in good selling condition.

Shay and Ross, two pupils, then counted the money from sales which gave a total gross profit of £260.50. Once the float had been taken out and resources that had been bought were paid for, the net profit was £150.90.

When the classes found out how much they had raised from their own arts and crafts they were delighted and ecstatic. They are now looking into getting a photo booth for their school leaving party as a reward for gaining such a good profit.
