“As a parent and a member of the parent's association I have nothing but good things to say about my experience of Merrylee Primary School. My first child started Merrylee when it was stillin the old campus and a much smaller school than it is now. My worry that the school would lose its sense of community and the feeling of being part of one big family when it moved to the new campus was completely unfounded. Mrs Mahindru and her staff have managed to maintain the ethos that has always made Merrylee Primary a school to be proud of. Every one of the staff members goes above and beyond to ensure our children receive the best educational experience possible. I have been lucky enough to be involved with Merrylee for 10 years now and have witnessed first-hand just how much effort goes on "behind the scenes". From paired reading to school shows, field trips to after school clubs, the staff and parent helpers at Merrylee work tirelessly to provide our children with a wide and varied education and for that I am eternally grateful.

Logan said “I like my school because I like Mrs Fishwick and all my friends. I love playing superheroes on the urban jungle and running round the pitch at fruit break. I have learned lots since I started school and made lots of new friends. I loved the Christmas fayre, we got to meet Santa and have our faces painted. My buddy is called Sam. When I am in primary 7 I want to be a buddy for one of the little guys in p1"

Amy said "I don't even know where to start to tell you all the things I like about my school. I love all the teachers and have made so many friends since I started primary 1. I like the trim trail and the urban jungle. We have just finished doing “The Egyptians " for our topic. That has been my favourite topic so far. We got to go to the Burrell Collection and learned all about life in the days of the Pharaohs and what it was like to live in ancient Egypt. We get to do lots of interesting stuff in school and sometimes it doesn’t even feel like we're learning but we are!" Parent of P1, P3 children and High School young person.

“I asked Josha few years back (possibly p2)how was school going and he replied "Better than expected. It's a bit like vegetable soup with big bits in - turns out I quite like them too".

On the subject of school trips oh where to start....!

I remember accompanying p3/2 to Dynamic Earth in the snow, p2b to an outdoor museum where we had thunder, lightning and hailstones, taking chickens to their new home near the Trossachs in thick fog with p5/4 and my very favourite p2/1 trip to Irvine beach. There we let the kids play in the water as we watched the ominous black clouds roll towards us. Just in the nick of time we got them changed and packed them into pop up tents where they happily scoffed their lunches. We poor adults however did not fit in the tents and after a futile attempt to make some form of shelter with 2 poles and a bit of tarpaulin we just stood there on the beach in wind and rain while the children heckled us from the tents. We were soaked, hungry, cold and just verging on hysteria.

Eventually the storm passed and the kids emerged and looked at us. "Mrs Fishwick" said Katie in surprise "whatever has happened to your hair?" "Well Katie" replied Mrs Fishwick calmly "some people pay to have their hair looking like this". Absolute classic. There have been lots of other trips where the weather wasn't a challenge but they weren't as much fun - I'd happily do it all again!” Parent of P3 and P6 children

I clearly recall my first impression of Merrylee Primary, then housed in the former building. Children held doors for the adult visitors. Although a small detail, I was impressed as it suggested the culture of consideration which I quickly discovered is inherent in Merrylee’s philosophy. Everyone is valued, every child encouraged. The staff generously give of their time and themselves to discover, nurture and develop the gifts in each child, and they do so in an environment which fosters respect for others – all others. My youngest is now in P7, and she is my third child to have come through the school. The school rightly deserves the ‘excellence’ it is categorised as achieving. David Hood, Parent and Chaplain

“My child, who has special needs, loves school and has always been encouraged to be part of all events and activities. I know I can talk to the school about anything and never feel a bother or stupid. It’s a great school to be part of.” Parent

Our eldest son started school this year. He was full of excitement, anticipation, and a few nerves before joining Merrylee. His welcome and induction has been brilliant, including having a P7 buddy. Almost one term later, he is settled, loving learning at school, proud of his achievements and loves Merrylee from the football pitch to his wonderful teacher. And he has some wonderful new pals. As new parents to the school community, we both feel very welcome by the teaching team and parents’ council. Parent of P1 child

“Teaching in Merrylee Primary is a great privilege and joy. Talking to colleagues throughout the city you have a sense of being somewhere special and unique in Merrylee. There is never a dull moment and every day brings new challenges. We work together to make what in my opinion is one of the best primary schools in the city. As a dedicated and committed teacher I wouldn’t want to teach anywhere else.” Caroline Campbell, Teacher
