RE:SUMMER SCHOOL 2007 AND FINANCIAL AID

If you plan to take summer classes at A.U. and are a current financial aid recipient, we are providing you the following information to help you determine if you may have financial aid eligibility applicable to summer enrollment. In most cases, the availability of financial aid for summer school is limited and not the same as during the academic year.

Contact the Financial Aid Office

Students should speak with a financial aid staff member well in advance of classes regarding their summer aid eligibility. An appointment is usually not necessary. Most questions can be answered by our staff on a walk-in basis or through a phone call.

Enrollment Status

Generally speaking, to be eligible for any type of financial aid you must be enrolled at least half-time (six credit hours per semester). For financial aid purposes the summer school sessions are combined and considered as one semester. (See Pell Grant and Alternative Loans below for exceptions to the half-time enrollment status).

AlfredUniversity Scholarships and Need-Based Grants

AlfredUniversity does not provide scholarship and need-based grant assistance for less than full-time enrollment (12 credits hours per semester) or less than the standard full-time tuition charge. Students who plan to enroll full-time and are receiving A.U. scholarships and grants should make an appointment with a financial aid counselor to review aid eligibility in light of their enrollment plans.

Perkins Loan and Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)

Perkins Loan and SEOG are not available for summer school. Funding for these federal programs is limited, and A.U. awards all available annual funding to students during the academic year.

Federal Stafford Loan (FSL)

At Alfred University, the annual FSL year begins with the fall semester and runs through the end of Summer Session II the following August. Students in the following categories may have some FSL eligibility available for summer classes:

attended only one semester during the academic year

did not borrow their full loan eligibility during the academic year

class standing changed from freshman to sophomore at the end of the spring 2007 semester

class standing changed from sophomore to junior at the end of the spring 2007 semester

We can quickly advise students if they have FSL available for the summer. Just stop by the Financial Aid Office or telephone us at 871-2159.

Pell Grant

Students who are eligible for Pell Grant and did not receive two full-time semester payments during the academic year may have Pell Grant eligibility for summer school. In some cases, Pell Grant may be available for less than half-time enrollment.

Alternative Loan Programs

There are alternative loans available through private lenders for summer school. Some programs will provide loans for less than half-time attendance. These loan programs are different than need-based federal loans. Alternative loan eligibility is based on an applicant's credit worthiness and dependent students usually need a co-signer. Alternative loan fact sheets are available at the Financial Aid Office or directly link to the lenders through the A.U. web home page at Click on “Future Students” and then click on “Financial Aid”. On the bottom of the page, click on Payment Plan and Alternative Loans.

Monthly Payment Plan

Students interested in a payment plan for summer classes should contact the StudentServiceCenter, located in Seidlin Hall, at 607-871-2123.

Graduate Assistantships

At A.U., graduate assistantships are coordinated and awarded by the graduate school academic departments and faculty advisors. Students must be full-time to receive any A.U. funded graduate assistantship. Questions regarding graduate assistantships for summer school should be directed to your academic program director.
