NDSOS Board Meeting Minutes

Friday, October 18, 2017 @ 7:30 pm

Governor’s Room – Ramkota Inn, Bismarck, ND

Members Present: Larry Zavada, Steve Heim, Tim Holte, Brandt Dick, Frank Schill, Jim Gross, Mitch Carlson, John Pretzer, Lori Carlson, Dean Ralston, Tom Retting, and Executive Director, ElRoy Burkle.

Also Present: Janet Brown, Treasurer and several representatives from other schools.

Call Meeting to Order Meeting was called to order at 7:38 by President Zavada. The NDSOS Board introduced themselves.

Agenda Motion by Steve Heim/second by Lori Carlson to approve the agenda as presented. MC

Minutes Motion by Dean Ralston/second by Frank Schill to approve the January 29, 2017meeting minutes and in-lieu of summer meeting report as presented. MC

Financial Report Janet Brown gave the financial report: 7/1/16 beginning checking balance of $78,364.41 and ending balance 6/30/17 of $99,293.78. The three CDs had ending value of $30,424.97. Checking account current balance is $121,466.65 and CDs valued at $30,440.18. Mitch Carlson moved to approve report with Frank Schill seconding the motion. MC Audit will be completed by Tim Holte and Brandt Dick.

Budget Motion by Frank Schill to approve 2017-2018 wage increases (ElRoy Burkle $2,000, Janet Brown $300, Brandt Dick – renew lobby arrangement for 2018 at $2,000) ElRoy Burkle’s salary will increase $2,000 for the 2018-2019 school year – two-year contract. Jim Gross seconded motion. MC

Other Reports

Mitch Carlson reported on SMART Labs. Seven schools have installed labs and the curriculum begins with kindergarten. Students will be presenting at the NDSBA convention on October 27.

Alan Peterson, NDCDE – NDCDE continues to provide ND students with choices, opportunities whether students are in a small school or a larger one.

ND Safety Council Update – John highlighted EMS and CPR classes as well as an Adverse Winter Driving Course.

Ag Online – Encouraged schools to visit the website as new courses are being offered.

Executive Director’s Report – NDSOS was recognized at legislature as a positive influence in education. ElRoy is researching possible opioid professional development.

Nominating Committee The Nominating Committee, Larry Zavada and Steve Heim, presented the following nominations for these regions:

Region 1: Tim Holte

Region 2: Steve Heim

Region 3: Frank Schill

Region 4: John Pretzer is not returning

Region 5: Lori Carlson

Region 6: Tom Rettig

Membership Update 146 members. New members include Devils Lake, Turtle Mountain Community, Manning, Oakes, Hettinger, New England, Cavalier and White Shield.
