“I can’t live without my phone,” is something people often say these days. They do not really mean that they will die without their phone like if they did not have food or water. People have items that they cherish that give their life quality. In my case, I could not live without cafes.

First of all, cafes provide me with coffee, a great friend of mine. There are days when my brain is not working efficiently and I am simply not focused. Suddenly I will see a sign for Starbucks or Twosome Place and I realize that I can save myself. For just a few thousand won I can get a steaming cup of coffee that will awaken my senses and delight my taste buds. Some people are very picky about the coffee they drink, but I am usually easygoing about it. This is great for me because it means that any café is a safe space for me to get what I need. A life with coffee would be too challenging to imagine.

Next, they are my ideal place to read and do work. I love to work in large comfortable areas with a little activity around me. I don’t want everything to be hectic, but I like to see and hear a few people or else I feel strange. I love to take a good book or some work I have to do to a café and have a relaxing time. There are two cafes in particular that I have worked a lot in. One is a Café Bene in Guri near a huge park, and another is a Starbucks in Toronto. In those two cafes, I have probably spent days or weeks of my life reading and working. Cafes are the perfect place to get things done.

Finally, cafes are important in my social life. They are a great place to meet up with friends and char for a few hours. When I meet with my friend Mike, we always choose a Starbucks as our meeting point and can easily spend a few hours there. Similarly, my wife and I usually meet our best friends in cafes wherever we go. Café owners always build their places trying to create a nice, relaxed environment that people can hang out in. They use nice furniture and soothing music that lets friends chat. I cannot imagine where I would tell my friends to meet or where we could hang out if there were no cafes.

In conclusion, a life without cafes would be dreadful for me. In a life without cafes I would walk around like a zombie, unable to focus, work comfortably, or socialize. Seeing a café as I walk down the street is a reminder that everything is fine with the world. They are safe spaces and absolutely necessary.
