-  Ms. Mulvaney will be attending the administrative retreat.

Challenges / Issues / Concerns:

-  We will be hiring two paraprofessionals.

-  Mr. Eatman has resigned his position as a Behavioral Health Technician. He was a valued member of the team and had incredible connections with students. His presence will be missed.

-  There were two referrals to the Florence Police Department for criminal damage done to classrooms by students. The time out room camera was destroyed in one incident and a 3 ft by 1 ft hole was kicked into the wall damaging the drywall substantially.

Director’s Summary:

This month had many highlights. We graduated our first student who participated in the FHS graduation ceremony. We also had three students promote from our 8th grade class to our high school class. We had several end of the year functions in which students were able to participate. Ms. Thompson arranged a day at the FHS swimming pool through the Town of Florence for several of our classes. The Town of Florence provided lifeguards for our program which was greatly appreciated. Ms. Hipskind’s class put together their own school yearbooks and shared them at a pizza party. Ms. Hurkley’s class had an end of the year pizza party as well. Ms. Davis’ class put on two dramatic performances for all students and staff at SuMMit. The first performance was a play students practiced called “Fractured Fairytales.” The second performance was a collection of plays that were written, directed and performed by the students themselves.

We also submitted a grant proposal for a mentoring program for our students at SuMMit. We will know in October if the grant is funded. We also collaborated with Mr. Bellemare at FK-8 and the Florence Police Department to apply for a School Resource Officer for the 2010-2011 schoolyear.

Unfortunately we had to make two referrals to the Florence Police Department for criminal damage done to our time-out room by two students on separate occasions.

Suspensions: Total: 5 (including 2 referrals to law enforcement)

(2) Criminal Damage (2) Aggression

(1) Extreme profanity to teacher and Director (complete noncompliance)

Board Report

June 2011

Enrollment: 34 to start 2010-2011

Highlights:

-  29 students are returning to their home schools to start the year

-  Students participated in Benchmark assessments

-  Ms. Baker was recognized as our Outstanding Teacher at the May School Board Meeting.

Activities through Next Month:

·  Student grades will be mailed out the week of May 31st.

·  We hope to hire for our two teaching positions by June 7th. We have several interviews scheduled.

Challenges / Issues / Concerns:

-  Student behaviors on the buses are the cause for many of our discipline issues. We had 5 suspensions this month due to bus behavior. An assault charge was made by the bus driver in one incident.

Director’s Summary:

The majority of students at STEP have demonstrated great behavior and are eligible to return to their home schools during the 2010-2011 school year. We are very proud of the 29 students who are returning. Unfortunately we have several students who continue to make poor choices resulting in suspension and/or discipline hearings. We will be looking at building in bus behavior as a component of our daily behavior intervention program.

Ms. Baker will be teaching at Poston Butte High School next year and Ms. Sandra Cole will be at a private Catholic school. We have enjoyed working with them and wish them the best in their new positions. We are in the process of interviewing candidates for their positions. We also will be hiring a resource teacher who will provide teacher support as well.
