Position Description

Title: Coordinator, Children’s Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Initiative

Supervisor: Sheri Falvay, Director of the Division of Mental Health Services to Children and Families, MDHHS

Purpose: To coordinate the initiative to provide screening, assessment and evidenced based treatment services for children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) services to be provided through the public mental health system.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1.  Work with Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) selected consultants to identify FASD screening and assessment tools appropriate for use in the public mental health system. Develop protocol or use of the tools in the CMHSP system. Coordinate and oversee regional training and coaching for Prepaid Impatient Health Plans and Community Mental Health Service Programs (PIHP/CMHSP) staff on identified tools.

2.  Coordinate and oversee regional trainings to PIHP/CMHSP, child welfare, and other child serving system staff and parents/caregivers in practical approaches to identifying FASD and addressing associated challenging behaviors utilizing an MDHHS selected provider.

3.  Coordinate the Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) Training initiative.

A.  Identify CMHSPs to participate in PCIT and coordinate with MDHHS regarding acceptance into training cohorts.

B.  Coordinate and oversee the Parents and Children Together (PACT) Training initiative.

C.  Work with MDHHS selected consultants to identify an evidence-based/supported intervention for adolescents with FASD to be piloted in the PIHP/CMHSP system. Coordinate and oversee the training initiative associated with selected evidence-based/supported intervention.

D.  Work with MDHHS and MSU evaluation team to design an evaluation and data collection system for the training initiatives to assess impact of interventions as well as staff confidence and ability to implement evidence based models with fidelity.

E.  Consult with MDHSS FASD Children’s Leadership Team.

F.  Other duties associated with the statewide FASD Intervention Initiative as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements:

Education: Possession of a Master’s degree in, Social Work, Psychology or Human Services related field or specific field related to assigned project is required.

Experience: A minimum of five years of professional experience delivering community based mental health services to children/youth with serious emotional disturbance and their families, experience providing services to children/youth with FASD and their families preferred. Experience working collaboratively with other child-serving human service systems. Experience with data collection and program evaluation

Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Standard office environment. Requires valid vehicle operator’s license where needed to perform duties of the position.

IMPACT ON PROJECTS, SERVICES AND OPERATIONS

This project is a high impact project. It is funded with Mental Health and Wellness funding and is the first to specifically target development of treatment services for children with FASD in the public mental health system. The results will be of high interest to Leadership of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities Administration and of MDHHS.
